PROFILE: Will
Groff is entering his third season as an assistant coach with
the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. He joined head coach John
Mayotte's staff as an assistant coach last season. The 2010
Golden Eagles finished in third place in the New York Collegiate
Baseball League's Eastern Division and then swept second-seeded
Oneonta in the Eastern Division semifinals. While the 2011
season will be Groff's second in a coaching role, it will be his
fourth with the organization. He played for the inaugural Golden
Eagles team in 2004 and then again in 2005.
Groff, a native of Queensbury, N.Y., is a graduate of the State
University of New York at Cortland. Groff played collegiately
for the Red Dragons from 2004 through 2006. He was the State
University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Year in
2006. Groff batted .464 in his final collegiate season with 77
hits, 54 runs scored, 29 stolen bases and a .534 on-base
percentage. The speedster also played one season of football for
the Red Dragons in 2003. He was a kick returner and brought back
two kicks for touchdowns, one of which went for 100 yards
against St. John Fisher in an ECAC postseason game.
The Cortland State outfielder was chosen by the St. Louis
Cardinals in the 29th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball
draft. Groff went on to play professionally in 2007 for the New
York-Penn League's Batavia Muckdogs, a short-season affiliate of
the Cardinals. He then competed briefly for the Can-Am League's
Nashua Pride in 2008. |
