Falls, NY-The Golden Eagles extended their win streak to seven games
as they defeated the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 6-1 on Monday night at
East Field. Glens Falls remains 1.5 games ahead of Amsterdam for the
Eastern Division title and home-field advantage in the first round of
the playoffs.
Ricky
Claudio and Mike Kindel each had two hits for the Golden Eagles while
first baseman Cullen Wacker (Auburn) had went two-for-four for the
DiamondDawgs.
Reliever
Antwan Brown (Santa Fe C.C.) pitched two and two-thirds innings
allowing one hit and striking out two to pick up his first win of the
season while DiamondDawgs starter Alex Lester (Kentucky) fell to 2-2
on the season.
Monday
afternoon, Golden Eagles third baseman Josh Anderson (Yavapai) was
named PGCBL Player of the Week batting .462 hitting two home runs and
eight RBI’s over a six game span. He started the week where he left
off as he hit his eighth home run of the season and overtaking the
all-time lead in Golden Eagles history for home runs hit in a season.
The
DiamondDawgs took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a sac fly RBI by
D.J. Hoagboon (UAlbany) following an error by Golden Eagles center
fielder Clayton Brown (Tacoma C.C) that allowed Michael Gunn to reach
third base.
In
the sixth inning, Mike Kindel (Kansas State) tied the game at 1-1 on a
solo home run to dead center field. It was Kindel‘s fourth home run
of the season and his 28th RBI.
Golden
Eagles starter Derek Mazzio (St.Louis) left the game in the seventh
inning with two runners on and one out. Mazzio allowed four hits, one
run (unearned), two walks and struck out seven. Antwan Brown came in
to strike out DiamondDawgs second baseman Mike Fasolo (Mohawk Valley
C.C.) and then getting center fielder George Hajjar (Felician) to
ground out to Roger Bernal to end the inning.
The
Golden Eagles took their first lead in the bottom half of the inning
at 2-1 as designated hitter KJ Alexander (Texas Pan America) picked up
a one-out double and then scored on catcher Jack Graham’s (Kenyon)RBI
double to center field.
DiamondDawgs
starter Alex Lester left the game after pitching seven innings
allowing six hits, two runs and striking out four.
Glens
Falls broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning off
DiamondDawgs reliever Dustin Stanton. Right fielder Ricky Claudio (St.
Thomas), shortstop Kyle Ruchim (Northwestern) and left fielder Mike
Kindel each singled to load the bases with no outs. Ricky Claudio
scored on a wild pitch to extend the Golden Eagles lead to 3-1. Then,
third baseman Josh Anderson hit a three-run homer over the left field
wall to give Glens Falls a 6-1 lead.
Reliever
Logan Carman (Southern Maine) came on to finish the bottom of the
eighth inning for Dustin Stanton (Southern Maine) and struck out one
of the three batters he faced.
Tuesday,
Glens Falls (30-15) travels to Shuttleworth Park to take on the
Amsterdam Mohawks for 7 pm. The Golden Eagles and Mohawks are in a
battle for home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Mohawk Valley (17-29) travels to Albany to face the Dutchmen at
Bellizzi Stadium.
The
Golden Eagles return home on Wednesday night to take on the Albany
Dutchmen in a doubleheader beginning at 5 pm. It is Fan Appreciation
Night at East Field as their will be giveaways through the game and a
post-game fireworks show.
