John
Mayotte has had a passion for coaching all the way back even before his
collegiate coaching days. From
1965-1975 coach Mayotte was the coach of Coxsackie-Athens high school where he
led them to a record 6 consecutive Section II titles and has the highest
winning percentage in Section II history.
In
1978, Coach Mayotte took over the helm at Eckerd College.
Coach would lead them to eleven 30-win seasons in 13 years as the head
coach. His team was annually
ranked in the top 10 in the country and three times was ranked #1. At Eckerd
he took his team to a Division II world series where the team finished third.
His team beat the Chicago White Sox in an exhibition game in the mid 80’s
and also beat the University of Miami four times in ten years.
Miami was, and still is, one of the best division I programs in the
country. He was a two-time
Sunshine State Conference coach of the year in 1980 & 1981.
From
1981-1985 Coach Mayotte was asked to coach in the Cape Cod League, with the
Chatham A’s, which is one of the best summer college leagues in the country.
Coach worked with well-known major league players Albert Belle and Jeff
Bagwell. Coach Mayotte was the
Cape Cod coach of the year in 1985.
Coach
Mayotte then took over as the head coach at Troy State University in his first
season in 1991. For his first two
seasons at Troy State University, the college was a Division II program.
For his last ten seasons at Troy State University, they were a Division
I program. In 1995 his team won
The Mid-Continent Tournament Championship and participated in the Division I
regional tournament. In 1996 his
team won The Summit League regular season title and 1997 they won both The
Mid-Continent regular and tournament titles while appearing in the Division I
regional tournament as well. In
1996 and 1997 Coach Mayotte was selected as The Mid-Continent Coach of the
Year.
In
over 25 years of NCAA coaching Coach Mayotte would compile over 800 Division
II victories and a .640 win percentage. Both
marks are in the top 50 in the division II record books.
He would compile over 280 Division I victories as well.
He would coach numerous players that played in the majors as well as
players that have been drafted. In
October 2007, John Mayotte was inducted into the Troy State University Hall of
Fame as a coach.
While
joining the New York Collegiate Baseball League in 2004, Coach Mayotte joined
the Golden Eagles and instantly found success wearing the green and yellow. In
his first season with the team, the Golden Eagles posted a 31-10 record
finishing first in the eastern division, receiving a playoff bid.
Mayotte’s
squad would return to the playoffs three years later in 2007, posting the best
record in Golden Eagles history of 34-6. Such a record would earn Mayotte’s
team with another eastern division title, his second of the NYCBL. The team
would continue to the championship after winning the Eastern Division Playoffs
Title as well. Mayotte would end the season in 2007 winning the NYCBL Coach of
the Year Award presented to him by the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
The
next year Mayotte and his new team of Golden Eagles would reach the goal of
his 2007 team. In ’08, Mayotte and the Golden Eagles once again finished
first in the Eastern Division, with a record of 31-10. They flew into the
playoffs where they ended up winning an Eastern Division Championship, before
falling in the League Championship.
Playoff
appearances followed the next two seasons in 2009 and 2010 for Coach Mayotte,
and so did the wins. Since receiving his 100th victory with the
Golden Eagles, on July 28th, 2007 versus the Little Falls Diamond
Minors at Veterans Park in Little Falls, New York, he has posted a 104 and 54
record which gives him a .658 winning percentage over that time span, as well
as three playoff appearances in as many years.
The
success continues this year along with winning his 200th victory,
which came back on July 14th, 2011 at East Field versus the
Watertown Wizards. The final score to that game was 10-0, giving the Golden
Eagles a convincing win for Mayotte’s historic milestone. Along with the
personal accolades, Mayotte has lead his team this year into the National
Rankings as high as twelve, and currently standing at eighteen according to
Perfect Game USA among collegiate summer teams around the country.
