NEWARK,
NY
- Friday night your Glens Falls Golden Eagles traveled to
Newark, New York to take on the Newark Pilots. The game would feature
two of the league’s top pitchers from the first half of the
inaugural season in Pilot’s Dominick Ruscitti (Kutztown) and Glens
Falls’ Derek Mazzio. Coming into last night’s contest, the two
pitchers combined for three wins on the year, two coming from the
Pilot’s ace.
Derek
Mazzio (St. Louis) was fantastic in his seven innings of work on the
night. He went seven innings allowing seven hits and only one run. He
also K’ed five pilots out of the twenty-seven faced throughout the
seven innings. For Newark, Ruscitti went the complete nine innings,
allowing four hits and also a run. He ended the night with six K’s
out of the thirty-one batters faced, and eventually got the win
whereas Mazzio got the no-decision after the Pilots took the lead late
in the game after Derek had already exited.
Highlights
on offense from last night’s game for Glens Falls include the play
of Ricky Claudio (St. Thomas). Claudio was created with driving in the
Golden Eagles only run on the night with an RBI single in the third
inning to score shortstop Anthony Pisani (Southern Maine). Also
recording hits on the night were third baseman Josh Anderson (Yavapai
CC) in the first, Anthony Pisani in the third, and catcher Dan Klein
in the third.
Defensively,
Mazzio and the Golden Eagles were helped out tremendously by their
backstop, Dan Klein who had a great game in his return for an arm
injury, which has had him shelved for a week or so. Throughout the
early going of the ballgame, Klein was able to throw out three Pilot
base runners attempting to steal. Klein was also able to complete two
of Mazzio’s five strikeouts due to dropped third strikes on
Klein’s own regard.
After
the top of the ninth’s frame the Golden Eagles fell short of the
Newark Pilots with a final score of 2-1. The Golden Eagles had one run
on four hits, and recorded an error on the night. The Pilots ended
with two runs on eight hits and no errors recorded.
The
season for the Golden Eagles continues tonight as the boys of summer
return to East Field in Glens Falls, New York to take on second place
and rival Amsterdam Mohawks at 7pm for Finch Paper Night.
