Falls, NY – Although the Glens Falls Golden Eagles struggled this
past week compared to the team’s earlier success, the team played
well enough to maintain a national ranking for the third week in a row.
The team has now been ranked nationally each week so far this season.
After
ranking in the 16th and 12th spots in the Perfect
Game USA Collegiate Summer Top 25 by going 10-3 (.769) while
picking up the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week award each week, the Golden
Eagles dropped to the 23rd spot in the rankings losing four
of seven games. Despite the subpar week, Glens Falls still stands atop
the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League with an excellent 13-7
(.650) record.
Over
halfway through the PGCBL summer season, the Golden Eagles are third
in batting with a .279 AVG and 12 team homeruns. On the mound, Glens
Falls leads the league with eight saves and 192 strikeouts while being
tied with Elmira with 13 wins. Aiding the team’s run prevention has
been an excellent defense with a .972 fielding percentage and the
fewest errors in the league.
Individually,
David Olson (Tacoma CC) and Josh Anderson (Yavapai) are among the
league leaders leading the Golden Eagles offense. Olson is batting
.359/.394/.484 good for seventh in the league in batting. Anderson has
provided the power for the Glens Falls offense batting .333/.376/.628
with five homeruns and eight doubles. The Poway, CA slugging
freshman’s homerun total ranks him second in the league.
Third
in the league with a 1.48 ERA, RHP Derek Mazzio (St. Louis) heads the
Glens Falls rotation with 33 strikeouts in 24.1 innings and his recent
PGCBL Pitcher of The Week award. Also among the league leaders in
strikeouts is LHP Nick Gonzalez (Southern Florida) with 26 in 18
innings of work (also an earlier pitcher of the week). Out of the
bullpen, Kyle Ruchim (Northwestern) and Olson lead the team in saves
with four and three saves respectively.
Thursday,
the Golden Eagles will be on the road at Newark looking to maintain
the team’s national ranking. Glens Falls next plays at home this
Saturday for Finch Paper Night vs. Amsterdam.
