Glens Falls Golden Eagles

June 29, 2011

Matt Arietta

Elmira, NY- Your Glens Falls Golden Eagles faced the Elmira Pioneers last night at Dunn Field in Elmira, New York for the second game of a two game series. Getting the start for Glens Falls was Siena sophomore, Neil Fryer. Fryer was 3-0 on the season. Starting for the Elmira Pioneers, was Matt Holling (Corning CC).

Things did not go Fryer’s way last night in Elmira. Neil only went two and two thirds scattering eight hits, allowing eight runs, and giving up nine earned. He also struck out three over his twenty batters faced.

The Golden Eagles sent Mike Tirri (Albany) to the mound to relieve Fryer, and for his first outing of the year, Tirri did not disappoint. Tirri went four and a third in relief. Tirri gave up only one earned run in the seventh while walking one, and K’ing none in his innings of work, before his Albany teammate Kevin Cowan pitched the eighth. Cowan remained dominate on the bump giving up one hit and facing one over the minimum striking out two.

On the offensive, the Golden Eagles were able to attack the Pioneers’ pitchers for eleven hits throughout the game. Sophomore Ricky Claudio (St. Thomas) went two for four with two runs scored, four runs batted in, and a stolen base in the defeat. Designated hitter David Olson, second baseman Kyle Ruchim, and shortstop Anthony Pisani joined Claudio in the two hit department as well. Between those three there was also three runs scored as well, two by Northwestern’s Kyle Ruchim.

In the end, the Golden Eagles fell short in the ninth falling one, two, three to Pioneer’s closer, Wes McBride (UNC Greensboro). The season continues tonight (6/30) at East Field when your Glens Falls Golden Eagles face off against the Watertown Wizards for the first time this season. Tickets for the game are five dollars. It is sure to be a great game!
