Glens
Falls, NY – Friday, students from Sanford Street Elementary, Hudson
Falls Primary School, and Hadley-Luzerne Elementary each received a
special visit from players of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles summer
collegiate baseball team who would themselves meet basketball star
Jimmer Fredette.
Visiting
the schools before their game against Albany in the evening, the
college student-athletes and ballplayers spoke about the importance of
reading and receiving a college education in today’s world.
While
visiting Hudson Falls Primary and Hadley-Luzerne, the players spoke to
students about education while taking a moment to dance up on a stage
with the young students during of a Hudson Falls gym class.
To
cap off their day of visits, the players visited Sanford Street
Elementary where the ballplayers read to Mrs. Savin’s class and
helped her students with the hatching of their baby chicks. Inspired
by the Glens Falls ballplayers, the students named one of the chicks
“Golden Eagle”.
During
the midst of the Golden Eagles’ visit at Sanford Street, the players
were able to meet college basketball star and future NBA star Jimmer
Fredette. Fredette, a Glens Falls native, spoke with students at his
former elementary school which is closing later this month. Jimmer
told the students of the importance of goal-setting and other lessons
he has learned over the course of his four years playing basketball at
Brigham Young University.
After
visiting the students, signing autographs, and meeting Fredette, the
Golden Eagles ballplayers were appreciative reflecting back upon the
experience. “It was unexpected but a fun and very memorable
experience” Golden Eagles second baseman Roger Bernal reflected.
“Jimmer is a very good guy and I was glad to meet him.”
Players
visiting the schools Friday included LHP Nick Gonzalez (South
Florida), 2B Roger Bernal (Texas Pan American), RF Ricky Claudio (St.
Thomas), C Dan Klein (Kansas St.), INF Anthony Pisani (Southern
Maine), and LHP Brennan Perry (Southern Maine).
