GLENS FALLS—For the third time this summer, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles defeated the Saratoga Phillies at East Side Rec in Saratoga.
Despite being shut out 3-0 and mustering a meager two hits in game one of the best-of-three playoff series against the Phillies at East Field on Saturday, Aug. 1, the Golden Eagles bats belted 10 total hits, scored eight runs, and defeated the Phillies 8-4 to knot the New York Collegiate Baseball League first-round playoff series up at 1-1.
The win forces a third and deciding game tonight at 7 p.m. at East Field.
Freshman center fielder Steve Zavala (Rutgers) and freshman second basemen Kevin Berry (New Orleans) led the way for the Golden Eagles as each scored two runs and drove home one RBI, with Berry adding two hits and Zavala reaching base on one walk and a fielder's choice. .
Junior designated hitter and cleanup hitter Mike Ferraro (San Diego), along with freshman left fielder Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans) both knocked in two RBI apiece.
Ferraro's double in the first inning scored both Jones, who walked, and junior right fielder Anthony Giansanti (Siena), who singled, to give the Golden Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
Jones finished 2-for-4, hitting two singles in his last two at-bats and working one walk in his first at-bat.
Freshman starting pitcher Tony Dischler (Louisiana Monroe) lasted six innings and improved his win-loss record to 5-1 this summer. His four strikeouts gives him the team-lead with 38.
Pitching in his fifth relief appearance this summer, freshman pitcher Francis Brooke (Northwestern) tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, zero walks, and two strikeouts to pick up his second save this summer.
Glens Falls scored three more runs in the sixth when freshman shortstop Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern) doubled to left leading off the inning and later scored on a double from sophomore first baseman Sean Lamont (Georgetown)
With the win, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles knotted the best-of-three game first-round playoff series up at 1-1.
The third and final game of the series starts at 7 p.m. at East Field. Should the Golden Eagles complete the split doubleheader sweep, they will travel to Amsterdam for a showdown with the top-seeded Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park.
