GLENS FALLS—After a heartbreaking loss to the second-place Amsterdam Mohawks (20-11) on Saturday, the first-place Glens Falls Golden Eagles (25-8), behind a stellar pitching performance from both freshman Francis Brooke (Northwestern) and junior Nathan Forer (Southern Illinois), shutout the last-place Albany Dutchmen (7-20) 4-0 at East Field on Sunday afternoon and improved their overall win-loss record to 25 wins and eight losses.
So far during the 2009 summer, the Glens Falls pitching staff has shutout their opponents three times this season. As a team, the Golden Eagles have only been shutout once.
Sophomore first basemen Sean Lamont (Georgetown) and freshman shortstop Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern) led the Golden Eagles offensive attack, as they combined for five of the teams' six total hits.
Lamont blasted his team-leading fourth homerun and ninth double this season, finishing the game a perfect 3-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI, and one walk.
Phillips finished 2-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI, and one walk.
Sophomore Nick Judkins (Iowa Central C.C.) added a pinch-hit RBI, while freshman center fielder Steve Zavala (Rutgers), freshman left fielder Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans) each scored one run apiece.
Jones, Phillips, and Lamont also each added a stolen base. Jones now leads the 2009 Glens Falls Golden Eagles with 12 stolen bases this season
Right-handed starter Brooke tossed five shutout innings, limiting the Dutchmen to just two hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk. Brooke now boosts a 2-0 record this summer in 12 total innings-pitched and four appearances, with this game being his first start of the season.
Forer, making his second relief appearance. pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out six Dutchmen hitters.
With an off day on Monday, the Golden Eagles travel to Amsterdam on July 21 for a game against the Mohawks and return to East Field on Wednesday, July 22, for another game against the Dutchmen. The first 250 fans in attendance for Wednesday's game will receive a free Glens Falls Golden Eagles back pack.
