GLENS FALLS—The Glens Falls Golden Eagles scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning, delivering four doubles out of the teams' seven total hits, defeating the Amsterdam Mohawks 3-1, and avenging a 7-2 loss to them at Shuttleworth Park in a game last week that was called after seven innings due to rain.
Pitching in his fifth start of the 2009 season, freshman right-hander Tony Dischler (University of Louisiana Monroe) worked his way out of trouble in the second after coughing up two, two-out singles, allowing one run to score on six hits in his six innings of work.
Dischler now holds a 3-1 win-loss record this season, with just 11 earned runs in almost 30 total innings. Dischler added three strikeouts and now leads the team with 28.
Junior pitcher Kellen Candau (Southern Illinois) picked up his second save this summer, relieving Jamie Storey (Houston Baptist) who left the game with an injury after facing just two batters. Candau also faced two batters and struck out one.
The Golden Eagles pitching staff has allowed one run in their past three games.
Glens Falls threatened in the second inning when, with one-out, sophomore Chris Lashmet laced a double off the wall and later advanced on a single from junior Gary DerHagopian (Siena).
The Golden Eagles lead in the NYCBL with 49 doubles this season.
Leadoff hitter, junior outfielder Ian Choy (Canisius) paced the Mohawks early, scoring the teams' first run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Austin Sheffield (Manhattan)
Freshman Steve Zavala (Rutgers) walked leading off both the first and fifth innings, his 13th and 14th base-on-balls this season.
In the fifth, junior outfielder Anthony Giansanti (Siena) singled putting two men on and no one out. Down in a 0-2 hole, freshman outfielder Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans) roped a two-run double that rolled to the center field wall, scoring both Zavala from third and Giansanti from second. Both runners moved up a base on a balk.
Phillips added a double and stole third before the inning ended.
After a pitching change opened the sixth, sophomore first basemen Nate Valdez (Central Arizona) doubled to center and walked to third after both freshman infielder Kevin Berry (New Orleans) and Zavala walked.
First-place Glens Falls ranks second behind the Watertown Wizards for most walks (118) in the NYCBL.
Then, with the bases drunk full of Golden Eagles runners, Giansanti fouled a ball off his foot but remained at the plate to finish his at-bat and drove a fly ball to deep center. Though the ball was caught, Valdez came chugging home look to score Glens Falls fourth run of the game.
As the catcher moved up the third baseline preparing to field the throw, the umps cited Valdez for runner interference completing the inning-ending double play and stifling the Golden Eagles rally in game one's final inning.
With the win, Glens Falls increases their East Field winning streak to six games and their lead in the East Division to four and one-half games ahead of the Amsterdam Mohawks; nine games over the Watertown Wizards and Mohawk Valley Diamonddawgs.
