AMSTERDAM—Luckily the rains held off for at least seven innings in the Glens Falls Golden Eagles game against the Amsterdam Mohawks on Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Unfortunately, umpires called the game after the Golden Eagles picked up their third and fourth hits in the top of the seventh inning.
Ultimately, East Division-leading Glens Falls (18-6) failed to mount another comeback victory, and lost 7-2 to the second place Amsterdam Mohawks (14-9).
The game, the second meeting between the two best teams in the East Division this season, got out of hand in the fifth and sixth innings when the Mohawks plated three runs on three hits in the fifth and three on three errors in the sixth.
Glens Falls last defeated Amsterdam 6-2 in their fifth game of the season way back on June 9 at Shuttleworth Park. The two teams have six more scheduled games against one another, with four being at East Field.
Sophomore Sean Lamont (Georgetown) crushed a towering two-run homerun, his first of the season, in this second inning that placed the Golden Eagles back on top after the Mohawks scored one run on two hits in the first.
Lamont has now driven in 11 RBI this season.
Freshman infielder Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern) reached on a fielder's choice before the Lamont homerun. Sophomore Chris Lashmet lead off the inning with a five-pitch walk, his seventh walk this summer, and freshman designated hitter Nate Valdez (Central Arizona) also walked for the 10th time this season before the inning came to an abrupt end.
Phillips and Valdez each added a single in the seventh; while senior outfielder Anthony Giansanti (Siena) opened the sixth with a single of his own. Phillips and Giansanti are both batting over .330 this summer, with sporting a .338 on-base percentage.
The hard-throwing junior southpaw, Jamie Storey (Houston Baptist) dropped his first game this summer, coughing up six hits in five innings, allowing four runs and striking out four Mohawk hitters.
With two strikeouts in the books during Storey's final inning, Mohawks first baseman Austin Sheffield (Manhattan) worked a 12-pitch at-bat before roping a two-run double to deep right and giving Amsterdam the lead for good.
Storey would go on to strikeout the side in the fifth before being replaced by freshman reliever Alex Frederick (Clemson), who pitched one inning, allowed zero earned runs, and struck out two. Of Storey's 16 strikeouts this season, nine have come in his last two outings.
The Glens Falls Golden Eagles next travel to Albany tonight for a showdown with the last place Dutchmen (5-13). Glens Falls has beat Albany in all five meeting this season, including two in extra innings.
With an off day on Thursday, the Golden Eagles return to East Field for the first time in July when they host a doubleheader against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Friday. Friday's doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. and will be "Rally Cap for East Field" night, sponsored by WCKM Radio. On Saturday and Sunday, the Glen Falls hosts Amsterdam.
