WATERTOWN—After sweeping a day-night doubleheader against the third-place Watertown Wizards (12-11) in walk-off fashion, followed by a four consecutive rainouts, the first-place Glens Falls Golden Eagles dropped just their second road game all season.
Of their 11 road games, Glens Falls sports a 9-2 win-loss record, with both losses coming at the hands of Watertown. The Golden Eagles had been riding a seven-game win streak prior to Sunday's 6-2 loss at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
Sophomore first basemen Sean Lamont (Georgetown) and senior right fielder Anthony Giansanti (Siena) each tallied two hits apiece, with Lamont doubling and scoring in the second inning. Lamont now leads the 2009 Golden Eagles with seven double this summer.
Clutch hitting continued in the fifth when, with two outs and freshmen designated hitter Nate Valdez on first via a walk, junior catcher Conner Gandossy's (St. Louis) single put runners at the corners for freshmen center fielder Steve Zavala (Rutgers).
Zavala then singled past the Wizards second base, allowing Valdez to score the teams' final run; yet Glens Falls still trailed Watertown 5-2.
With the Golden Eagles trailing 5-1 after the first three innings, sophomore third basemen Chris Lashmet (Northwestern) tripled leading off the sixth inning, but failed to score and chip away at teams' four-run deficit.
Glens Falls out-hit Watertown eight to seven, but committed five fielding errors to the Wizards one. The Wizards added their sixth run in the fifth on a homerun from designated hitter Brant Jones.
Pinch-hitting specialist, junior catcher Gary DerHagopian (Siena) singled up the middle in the ninth for Glens Falls final hit of the game.
Appearing in his fifth game, sophomore Chase Richard (Southern) lost his first game of the season out of three previous starts. His 2.49 ERA puts him forth of the Golden Eagles in that category. In his five innings-pitched, Richard allowed three earned runs on six hits, struck out two and walked one.
In his third relief appearance this season, freshman right-hander Andrew Brown (Akron) tossed three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, one walk, and striking out two. Opposing hitters are batting a mere .189 against Brown this season.
Up next, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles play Watertown again on Monday for a doubleheader, with one-game being a makeup from a previous rainout last weekend.
The Golden Eagles the go on the road Tuesday and Wednesday for games against the second-place Amsterdam Mohawks (12-7) and the last-place Albany Dutchmen (4-13) before returning home to East Field for a doubleheader against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on July 10.
