GLENS FALLS GOLDEN EAGLES BASEBALL EAGLES NEST NEWS # 2 MARCH 18, 2009

JUSTIN ZUMWALDE OF PIMA COLLEGE (AZ)

Freshman outfielder has been a consistent offensive force in his initial season at Pima College. Justin ranks in the top 15 hitters for average in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference with a .377 (20-for-53) average and has accumulated seven doubles, two triples and three home runs playing in a wood bat only conference. Twelve out of his 20 hits have been for extra bases and he has an outstanding slugging percentage of .760.

NATHAN FORER RHP UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Nate is a top of the rotation conference starter for the Salukis. He has pitched extremely well this season. His ERA (4.50) ranks # 2 on the staff, he has given up only 24 hits in 24 innings, walked eight and struck out 14. He pitched a great game vs. Northern Illinois on March 7th, throwing seven innings, allowed only three hits, one run, walked four and struck out three yet picked up the loss in a 1-0 contest. Opposing batters are only hitting .264 against his offerings.

LANCE DURHAM OF/1B UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI

Lance has been a model of consistency this spring for the Bearcats. He is batting at a .500 clip (29-for-58), and leads the team in hits and on base percentage (.583). He has one double, two homers and 12 RBI while batting in the clean up spot in the batting order. He was 3-for-4 vs. Western Michigan in two consecutive games, went 3-for-4 vs. Xavier with a home run, was 3-for-5 vs. Bradley. Multiple hit games have been commonplace for Lance on the young season.

JAMIE STOREY LHP MIDLAND COLLEGE (TX)

Jamie pitched out of the bullpen all four games last weekend in conference play vs. Frank Phillips JC. In game one he threw one inning with no runs and one strikeout. Game # 2 Jamie pitched to two batters and struck out both. In game # 3 he threw 2/3 innings again and struck out both hitters. He finished the weekend series by throwing two and 2/3 innings in the final contest , giving up two runs, striking out four and getting the win. Jamie has 29 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched (1.7 SO per innings pitched), consistently ranking in the top three in the nation in that category.

WILLIE BEARD RHP RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Willie has pitched well as a red shirt freshman, all of his outings out of the bullpen. He has a 2-0 record, pitching 14 2/3 innings, walking seven and striking out 12 batters. His 5.52 ERA ranks # 4 on the staff , his seven appearances ranks # 2 on the pitching staff and he ranks # 3 in innings pitched. Willie worked four innings in a stint vs. Penn State on March 14, allowed just one run, four hits, and had two strikeouts in recording his second victory. He threw two innings of two hit ball, giving up no runs on 3/11 vs. New Jersey Tech and gained his initial collegiate win vs. Old Dominion on March 8, pitching four innings of two hit and no run baseball while striking out five.

STEVE ZAVALA LHP/OF RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Steve made his initial start as a collegiate pitcher vs. Penn State on March 14. He pitched well, throwing four and 1/3 innings, scattering four hits and striking out one. He left the game with a 5-1 lead and recorded his first win in college baseball. Steve pitched in relief vs. Temple on 3/10, throwing three and 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, three earned runs, walked none and struck out two.

RODARRICK JONES OF UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Rod continues to perform well his freshman season at UNO. He is batting .333 (12-for-36) in 11 starts in left field with one triple, six RBI and two stolen bases. In a Sun Belt Conference game vs. Louisiana-Monroe, he went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

ANDREW BROWN RHP UNIVERSITY OF AKRON

Freshman starter has become the # 3 or # 4 starter in the Akron rotation. He has made starts against Big Ten opponents Michigan, Penn State and Illinois in the early going. He has pitched at least five innings in all of those starts, ranks # 3 in innings pitched on the staff and is averaging one strikeout per innings pitched.

DANIEL WATTS LHP JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY

Daniel had two starts for the Gamecocks recently vs. Harvard and Miami (OH). His most impressive stint was against Miami when he threw five innings, giving up six hits, four runs, walked two and struck out two.

RICKY OTT LHP UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Ricky leads the staff in appearances with seven, all in relief, and ranks # 4 in innings pitched. In Sun Belt Conference play, Ricky has been busy pitching in the series vs. Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Monroe. On March 7 vs. MTSU he came out of the bullpen to get two big outs in the 7th inning to preserve a 3-2 UNO lead. The next day he threw one and 1/3 innings and gave up no hits while walking two and striking out two Blue Raiders. On March 15 vs. ULM he pitched two innings, allowing three hits, two runs, walked none and struck out two.

CHRIS LASHMET 3B NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

Chris had a two run single to extend a lead to 3-0 vs. Illinois Chicago on 3/14 and was 2-for-5 vs. Kansas with one run scored. He has struggled offensively in the early season but should break out just in time for Big Ten Conference play.

JERRY A'HEARN RHP CENTRAL ARIZONA COLLEGE

Jerry continues his excellent spring performance on an extremely talented # 4 ranked (NJCAA) Central Arizona pitching staff. He pitched five innings in a doubleheader start vs. Luna College, giving up four hits, one run, walked one and struck out one to raise his record to 3-0. In 20 and 2/3 innings pitched this spring, he has give up 15 hits, walked six and struck out 21 opposing batters. His 1.74 ERA indicates the level of his pitching success this spring.

ALEX FREDERICK RHP CLEMSON UNIVERSITY

Alex made his Clemson debut in a one inning relief stint vs. UNC Asheville on March 5th. He allowed one hit, walked none and had no strikeouts. Congratulations on your Division I debut, Alex.

ZACH KRAHAM RHP/3B UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY

Zach made his pitching debut on March 7 vs. Creighton University. The very talented freshman is being brought along slowly and should see expanded innings when warm weather approaches. He pitched one inning and gave up a hit, one run, walked two and struck out one.

ANTHONY GIANSANTI OF/RHP SIENA COLLEGE

Anthony had a 2-for-3 performance vs. Michigan with three RBI, two runs, a home run, a sacrifice fly, stolen base and four putouts. On March 14 vs. West Virginia, he was 2-for-5 with a run scored and got his first save of the season, coming in from right field and pitching one and 1/3 innings and allowing no hits or runs. Anthony is batting .277 (18-for-65) with a team leading three home runs, five RBI and a .477 slugging percentage.

GARY DERHAGOPIAN CATCHER SIENA COLLEGE

Gary was 2-for-7 in a doubleheader vs. West Virginia with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. He is batting .244 with two home runs, five RBI and a .455 slugging percentage on the season.

SPENSER MAILMAN 2B/SS MIDLAND COLLEGE

Spenser has started every game this spring. He is hitting .294 (25-for-85) as a leadoff man this season. He leads the team with 15 walks, has 11 RBI and is fielding at .972 with only three errors in 106 chances.

PEPITO MORENO SS/2B PIMA COLLEGE

Pepito is hitting .289 (22-76) with four doubles, two triples, 12 RBI and leads the team in walks (16), hit by pitch (4) and has a .553 on base percentage.

2009 Golden Eagles Draft Update

Instead of doning an official wear a Golden Eagles uniform, both infielder Jakob Dalfonso (MIddle Georgia) and first basemen Lance Durham (Cincinnati) opted for a contract with a Major League Baseball ballclib. Darin Williams has lined up a big name for his big winter event.
