EAGLES NEST NEWS # 1   MARCH 3, 2009

 

 TONY DISCHLER   RHP   UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA MONROE

Freshman right hander pitched six innings in his initial start and picked up the win in a 11-7 win over Grambling State . Tony scattered six hits, gave up two earned runs, walked four and struck out two. He threw 99 pitches with 61 strikes in the outing on March 1. He has appeared in two games and pitched eight innings, giving up seven hits, two earned runs and ranks # 2 in ERA at 2.25 and batting average against at .250.

ANDREW BROWN   RHP   UNIVERSITY OF AKRON

Freshman right hander got his first intercollegiate start against the highly touted offense of the Michigan Wolverines on March 1st. Andrew threw five full innings, gave up only three hits, two runs, walked five and struck out six. He threw 98 pitches with 56 strikes. He escaped a big jam in the fourth inning when the Wolverines loaded the bases with one out but Andrew proceeded to get two big strikeouts to escape unscathed. He departed with a 7-2 lead but gained a no decision in an eventual 11-7 Michigan victory.  

SPENSER MAILMAN   2B/SS   MIDLAND COLLEGE

Freshman middle infielder has garnered eight multiple hit games so far through 19 games of JC baseball. On February 28 Spenser went 4-for-4 with two runs scored in a victory over Western Texas JC. He started the season on a 8-for13 roll in the first four games of his collegiate career. Spenser is hitting .328 (22-for-67) with 16 runs and 10 RBI for the Chaps and was errorless in his first 56 chances through 15 games this spring.

JUSTIN ZUMWALDE   OF   PIMA COLLEGE

Freshman outfielder was 3-for-5 vs. Arizona Western JC with three doubles, two runs and three RBI in a 10-1 Pima victory. He is batting at a .375 clip through 15 games with two homers, six doubles and 10 RBI.

LANCE DURHAM    OF   UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI

Junior college transfer has been batting in the middle of the order, primarily in the # 4 hole for the Bearcats. He is batting .450 (9-for-20) in 5 games with two hits in four of the five games played so far. Lance has one outfield assist, throwing a runner out at the plate in a contest vs. Michigan in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Clearwater, FL.

NATHAN FORER   RHP   SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY

Junior pitched an excellent game vs. Stetson in DeLand , FL on February 28th. He threw five innings, giving up seven hits, two runs, walked one and struck out four and left the game with a 4-2 lead in an eventual Stetson victory. Nate is presently the # 2 starter for the Salukis and has a 0-1 record with an 5.56 ERA

ERIC PHILLIPS   INFIELDER   GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

Versatile freshman has played 1B, 2B and DH in four games this season. He is batting at a .444 clip (4-for-9) with six runs, five RBI and a .571 on base percentage. In his initial start of the season vs. Presbyterian he went 1-for-3 and had three crucial RBI in a 10-8 GSU victory. In his second start vs. Coppin State he was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI and was 1-for-2 with two runs in the second game of the doubleheader vs. Coppin.

JERRY A’HEARN   RHP   CENTRAL ARIZONA COLLEGE

Starter/reliever for a loaded CAC pitching staff and a top ranked NJCAA program. He has a 2-0 record, an 1.72 ERA and in 16 innings he has given up 11 hits, walked four batters and struck out 19.

RICKY OTT   LHP   UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Freshman pitcher has made three appearances, all in relief, with 7 2/3 innings(.third most on the staff) with a 7.04 ERA. His most extended outing was vs. Towson on 2/20 when he threw 4 and 2/3 innings giving up five hits with three runs, no walks and four strikeouts. Ricky threw 45 strikes out of 58 pitches thrown in that stint.

JAMIE STOREY   LHP   MIDLAND COLLEGE

Jamie has struggled at times and has been exceptional on occasions this spring. He has an 0-2 record, a 6.25 ERA but has led the nation in strikeouts per innings pitched and presently ranks # 3 in that category. He has 18 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings. Against Temple College he struck out 12 batters in a 4 2/3 innings stint.

DANIEL WATTS   LHP   JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY

Daniel has made three appearances on the young season and has performed admirably. He has pitched four innings, given up three hits, one run, walked none and struck out four. His 2.25 ERA ranks him as # 2 on the Gamecock staff. He did not allow a base runner in his first two relief appearances at the collegiate level.

RODARRICK JONES   OF   UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Rod played in six of the nine contests so far. The highly touted freshman is batting .375 (6-for-16) with three RBI and two stolen bases. He is hitting .750 in his last three starts after an 0-for-8 start to the season.

KEVIN BERRY   INFIELDER   UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Kevin has played in five games and is hitting .286 with one double and an RBI. He had a pinch hit double vs. Towson with an RBI and started a game at second base.

ANTHONY GIANSANTI   OF/RHP   SIENA COLLEGE

Anthony is batting .308 (12-for-39) in nine games with two home runs, one double, one triple, a .538 slugging percentage. He was 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI vs. Dallas Baptist on 2/28, was 3-for-4 with two runs vs. Dallas Baptist on 2/26, and went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI vs. Arkansas State in the opening game of the season. Anthony was 2-for-4 vs. Lamar on 2/24. He also pitched one inning vs. UT Arlington, gave up no hits, walked one and struck out two.

GARY DERHAGOPIAN   CATCHER   SIENA COLLEGE

Gary is batting .263 in seven games with one home run and four RBI. He went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI vs. Dallas Baptist on 2/26. He was selected as the preseason MAAC All Conference catcher for 2009.

STEVE ZAVALA   LHP/OF   RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Steve had an impressive outing on February 28th vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta . He threw 1 and 1/3 innings out of the bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings, giving up one hit and walking no one.

WILLIE BEARD   RHP   RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Willie threw one inning in relief vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta on February 28th, game # 2 of a doubleheader, giving up one run on one hit and walked one and struck out one.

TYLER SMITH   1B/DH   NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE

Tyler has rebounded well after early season struggles. The football player turned baseball player has hit at a .375 clip of late that has brought his average up to .296 (16-for-54) with three doubles, two triples and a home run, along with eight RBI. He hit .600 (3-for-5) this past weekend with a 1.200 slugging percentage

PEPITO MORENO    SS/2B   PIMA COLLEGE

Pepito is hitting .275 (14-for-51) this spring in 15 games. He bats leadoff, has two doubles and a triple while playing every day at shortstop.

INJURIES:

COLE LIVERMORE    RHP   NORTHWESTERN

Strained elbow diagnosed and will rehab several weeks before throwing again. Hopes to be back to his # 2 starter role by Big Ten Conference play.

STEVE NIKORAK   RHP/IF   TEMPLE UNIVERSITY

Steve started game # 1 vs. Wichita State in Ft. Myers FL on February 20th. He pitched into the fourth inning, keeping WSU off balance, allowing only one hit while facing one over the minimum. Unfortunately, he had to be removed from the game with an injury to his elbow. He visited Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham this week and must undergo Tommy John Surgery and a long recuperative period. We wish him the best!!
