Golden Eagles Fall in Season Opening Pitching Duel

Glens Falls, NY- The Glens Falls Golden Eagles opened their season with a loss to the visiting Amsterdam Mohawks by a score of 1-0.  The loss leaves Glens Falls with a 2-3 all-time record on opening night and was seen by a crowd of 1,103.

All-American southpaw Shane Davis (Canisius) started the game as the opening-day starter.  Davis went five innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out five and walking none.  Davis walked none and induced a whopping nine groundouts.

Towering right-handed pitcher Eric Arnett (Indiana) relieved Davis to start the sixth inning.  Arnett ran into trouble in the top of the seventh inning after allowing centerfielder Mark Onorati (Manhattan) to single and then advance to second on a failed pickoff attempt with no outs.  The following Mohawk moved Onorati to third on a fly out to right.  Arnett struck out the next Mohawk, but the batter advanced to first and Onorati scored from third on the wild pitch.  Arnett pitched four strong innings only allowing one hit and that one unearned run.  Arnett struck out four and walked two.

The Golden Eagles showed signs of life in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings as third baseman Todd Brazeal’s broken bat single fell fair down the right-field line to begin the seventh and shortstop Curt Courtwright (Missouri State) led off the eighth with a walk.  Brazeal (South Florida) was caught trying to advance an extra base on a Mohawk error and Courtwright was left stranded on second to end the eighth.  The Golden Eagles left six runners on base in the game.

Glens Falls’ last chance in the ninth saw extinguished as the Golden Eagles went down in order.

Mohawks starting pitcher Dan Forman (Manhattan) proved to be a formidable opponent for Glens Falls.  The lefty Forman pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out six while only walking one.  Ben Alsup (Louisiana State) relieved Forman to begin the eighth inning.  Alsup earned the save by pitching two innings of no-hit ball while striking out one and walking one.

The Golden Eagles are next in action tomorrow, Saturday, June 7 as they travel to the Green Mountain State to battle the Bennington Bombers at 1 p.m..  The Golden Eagles will play at home next on Sunday, June 8 as they host their I-87 rival Saratoga Phillies at 5 p.m. at East Field.
