Golden Eagles survive first round
Glens Falls to face Saratoga in East Division finals

GLENS FALLS * When Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg's college coach called offering a spot on the Glens Falls Golden Eagles roster, Spanjer-Furstenburg didnt hesitate.

The sophomore at Florida Atlantic booked a plane ticket from Florida the next morning and suited up for the Eagles on July 7. On Wednesday night, in the rubber match of Glens Falls best-of-three series with Little Falls, Spanjer-Furstenburg provided the go-ahead hit — a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth — as the Golden Eagles won their first playoff series in franchise history by defeating the Miners, 7-4.

Glens Falls advances to play the Saratoga Phillies in a best-of-three series for the East Division title of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The Golden Eagles host Game 1 tonight at 7 at East Field.

Spanjer-Furstenburg, the designated hitter, batted eighth in the lineup and went hitless through three at-bats.

"I didn't do much most of the game" Spanjer-Furstenburg said. "I shortened up on the bat at the end and tried to stay relaxed."

His line-drive double to left-center scored Rick Seltzer, who had walked to start the rally.

Spanjer-Furstenburg wasnÂ’t the only newcomer to contribute for Glens Falls. Catcher Brad Johnson, who joined the team on July 4, followed Spanjer-FurstenburgÂ’s double with a sharply hit RBI single. Jake Owens added another insurance run when he tripled in Johnson.

“Those we big hits,” Glens Falls head coach John Mayotte said. “Offense is cyclical, up and down, up and down.”

For much of the game, the Golden Eagles seemed on the down side of Mayotte’s offensive cycle — accumulating only four hits before the eighth inning. Glens Falls (36-7) scored three runs in the first inning, but none were earned.

In a season that saw the Golden Eagles race to the East Division title behind the strength of its pitching and timely hitting, it appeared, for much of Wednesday night, that both those traits had disappeared from the Glens FallsÂ’ arsenal.

Starting pitcher Mark Wanamaker allowed two runs in the top of the first and struggled through four innings. Wanamaker was ejected by the home plate umpire in the top of the fifth.

“Mike said something to him, the umpire,” Mayotte explained after the game. “I was walking to the mound because I wanted to calm Mike down. I’m not sure what was said.”

Mayotte called Zac Farry to the mound. Farry pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out six.

The Golden Eagles won the series after dropping the opening game, at home, 6-4. Little Falls (18-27) finished fourth in the East Division.

“During the season, we didn’t, since I’ve been here, have much pressure on us,” Spanjer-Furstenburg said. “Losing that first game, sure, it unnerved us a little, but nothing we couldn’t handle.”
