Dry going leads to Eagles' outburst
After three-game hiatus because of rain Glens Falls breaks out the bats

GLENS FALLS -- Sometimes college students take things for granted. But on Saturday, players from both the Watertown Wizards and Glens Falls Golden Eagles were very thankful for a little thing like not having the ground squish when they walked.

With both teams having been rained out for the past three games, seeing the sun again was reason for celebration. The Eagles celebrated better, banging out nine hits in a 10-0 Eastern Division win in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at East Field. It was the first game of a doubleheader and the continuation of a game that barely started on July 11.

After the win, Glens Falls (26-5) stood six games ahead of Saratoga for the division lead.

"Both teams were feeling out each other early on," Glens Falls coach John Mayotte said. "I was surprised the pitchers were as sharp as they were. But I saw as time wore on, we were more disciplined at the plate."

Glens Falls struck first in the fifth inning. Mike Konstanty drew a leadoff walk. Daniel Cooke sacrificed, moving Konstanty to second. Two batters later, with Riann Spanjer-Furstenburg on first, Joe Mercurio stroked a single to right-center field to score Konstanty. Jake Owens followed with an infield single RBI.

The Eagles added four runs in the seventh, all with two outs. Owens walked, stole second and scored on DeGeorge's double to left field. After Jake Shaffer walked, Kevin Mahoney hit a towering three-run home run to right-center field.

"Kevin Mahoney has just been playing out of his mind. He's showed me a lot," Mayotte said of the Canisius College infielder. "He's had good focus and he's gotten the rewards for his preparation. He's an RBI machine now."

Glens Falls added four more in the eighth, with Mercurio (2-for-4, 3 RBI) adding a two-run single, DeGeorge hitting another RBI double and Mahoney knocking in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Brian Moran earned the win, allowing just four hits over seven innings.

"As good as our pitching has been, we've been fortunate to get some runs. It's been tough to get a big inning with the pitching we've faced, but we got some this game, which is a help," Mayotte said.

Eagles lose nightcap

GLENS FALLS -- A five-run fifth inning was all the Wizards needed, as they salvaged a split on the day by defeating Glens Falls 5-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Victor Croglio had a two-run single to start things off in the fifth. Jonathan Lilly and Chris Edmondson added RBI singles, while Chris Haynes drove in the last run on a sacrifice fly.

Glens Falls scored one in the sixth when Casey Larson led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles' final run came in the seventh when Shaffer homered to right-center field. Shaffer also added a single.
