Glens Falls rained out for second straight night

GLENS FALLS -- East Field on Thursday resembled a rice paddy for the second straight day, postponing the Glens Falls Golden Eagles'€™ NYCBL game.

The way things have gone this season, that seems to be the only way to keep the home team out of the win column, which Glens Falls will attempt to add to today by traveling to Watertown for a doubleheader.

The teams meet at East Field on Saturday for another doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m.

With a little more than a week left in their regular season, the Golden Eagles are a league-best 25-5. They'€™ve held the best record in the league since the last week of June, when they ran off nine straight wins.

'€œWe wanted it to be a special summer,'€ coach John Mayotte said. '€œBut the job isn'€™t finished yet.'€

This year'€™s season has stoked memories of 2004, the team'€™s inaugural season. That summer, the Eagles finished with the best mark in the league (31-10), only to fail to win a playoff game.

It was with this in mind that someone asked Mayotte if his team may have already peaked.

'€œNot at all,'€ he said. '€œI think we have any number of players who can improve and play their best baseball.'€

Mayotte attributes much of this year'€™s success to a well-rounded pitching staff and stellar middle-infield play. The

Golden Eagles have a collective 2.56 ERA, and shortstop Dan DeGeorge and second baseman Jake Owens have combined for 58 of a possible 60 starts.

Mayotte said ideally the team would have '€œ11 or 12 pitchers,'€ but says working with nine allows everyone plenty of innings, plenty of opportunity to remain sharp.

'€œI'€™m happy with the nine we got,'€ Mayotte said.

Notes: Third baseman Kevin Mahoney leads the league in RBIs (35) through Wednesday. Mahoney, DeGeorge and Jake Shaffer are all in the top-15 in batting average. ... The league'€™s playoffs, which begin July 30, will follow this format: higher-seeded team hosts Game 1, travels for Game 2, then hosts Game 3, if necessary. ... The Eagles added outfielder Eric Pelot (Notre Dame College of Ohio) to their roster this week. The league granted the team an injury exemption for Rutgers'€™ Luis Feliz (torn meniscus), who left the team in mid-July. League approval was necessary because teams had to

set their final rosters by July 4, Eagles spokesman Jeremy Winig said.
