SARATOGA SPRINGS * Brian Moran was the one wearing the bright yellow socks with the green stirups.
On Sunday night, he was also the one working the mound for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, pitching a complete game and holding the Saratoga Phillies to one run in a 7-1 victory at East Field. With the win, Glens Falls improved to 21-4, while Saratoga dropped to 14-10. The Golden Eagles pushed their East Division lead to 6 1/2 games over the second-place Phillies.
On June 24, Moran traveled to Omaha, Neb., to watch his college club, the University of North Carolina, in the championship of the College World Series.
“That motivated me, ” said Moran who, as a freshman, was left of the Tar Heels ’ postseason roster. “I really think I ’ve gotten better by pitching here. ”
Moran said catcher Joe Mercurio, “called a great game. ” The duo worked the Phillies lineup efficiently, allowing only five hits and no-hitting the Phillies from the fifth to the eighth inning. Saratoga connected for two singles in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn ’t get past second base. The Phillies scored their lone run in the fourth on a long sacrifice fly to left field.
For the Eagles, it was also a long fly ball that did most of the damage. In the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, Mike Konstanty, who plays his college ball at the University of Albany, connected on a fast ball and launched it over the left field fence. His home run broke the game open, giving Glens Falls its final margin of victory. Konstanty finished with five RBIs and two hits.
“I thought it had a chance, ” Konstanty said of his home run. “I was pulling for it. ”
The entire Eagles ’ lineup, except for Moran, who didn ’t bat, picked up a hit. Right fielder Jake Shaffer went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Mecurio and shortstop Dan DeGeorge also had multiple-hit games.
“This is how a team plays when it ’s playing well, ” said Glens Falls head coach John Mayotte. “They get clutch hits and great pitching. ”
Sunday ’s game was the sixth meeting this season between Glens Falls and Saratoga, with the Eagles owning a 4-to-2 advantage in the season series. In a league where some teams are lengthy bus rides away, the short distance between the two clubs makes for a natural rivalry.
“It ’s fun to play with them, ” Moran said. “They ’re usually nail-biting games. ”
Mayotte had a different take on the match-up, saying: “I guess it makes for a good news print story. ”
