Another victory for Eagles

GLENS FALLS -- When Dan DeGeorge walked to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, the announcer ’s booth played his selection: “It ’s all about the Benjamins ” by P. Diddy.

The rap song hasn ’t always accompanied DeGeorge to the batter ’s box. When DeGeorge started with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, “Brandy (You ’re a Fine Girl), ” pumped from the speakers.

While both are admirable selections, the song that defined DeGeorge ’s eighth-inning at bat was more along the lines of, “Wild Thing. ”

A passed ball and a wild pitch during DeGeorge ’s fourth at bat of the game scored the only run as Glens Falls beat Little Falls 1-0 on Friday night at East Field. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 15-3, which puts them 3 1/2 games ahead of the Saratoga Phillies in the East Division and tied with Allegany County for the best record in the NYCBL.

When DeGeorge ’s at-bat started, catcher Joe Mercurio danced off second base. DeGeorge watched a ball in the dirt get past catcher Danny Etkin. Mercurio advanced to third. With two strikes on him, DeGeorge swung through a ball outside the zone, a wild pitch, that scooted almost to the backstop. DeGeorge sprinted to first and Mercurio home, where he narrowly escaped the tag of covering pitcher, Isaac Johnson.

“I was just thinking to get a ball in the air, ” said DeGeorge, who batted with only one out.

“I swung at a bad pitch, yes. It was a big hit by Joe that got us that run. ”

A soon-to-be sophomore at Princeton University, De-George has been, according to Golden Eagles coach John Mayotte “clutch all season. ”

Even though DeGeorge has come up with big hits for Glens Falls, his teammates still wouldn ’t allow him to play “Brandy, ” by The Lookouts, every time he walked to the plate. While DeGeorge did not comment on why the song was his initial choice, the band does hail from New Jersey - which is also where he grew up.

“I like to hear something that relaxes me, ” DeGeorge said.

The biggest relaxer for Mayotte was starting pitcher Tommy Meagher, who tossed eight scoreless innings and mixed a fastball, curve and change-up to earn the victory.

“It was probably my strongest outing of the season, ” said Meagher, who watched college teammate Adam Veres (St. Petersburg College) pitch the ninth inning for his first save of the season.

“I hate to take him out when he ’s pitching so well, ” Mayotte said of Meagher, “but first and foremost we worry about these kids futures. ”
