New arrival pitches Golden Eagles past Saratoga

GLENS FALLS -- At 3 p.m. on Saturday, Mike Wanamaker walked into East Field and met his Golden Eagles teammates for the first time. A little more than six hours later, he stood in front of the dugout, accepting pats on the shoulder and handshakes like he'd known these guys forever.

Pitching six strong innings in a 3-1 Glens Falls win over the Saratoga Phillies goes a long way for introductions.

There were other reasons for the high mood:

The victory was the Golden Eagles' third in two days and gave them a 2 1/2-game lead over the Phillies in the Eastern Division of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.

For Wanamaker, it was a glimpse of what the rest of the summer will look like. Currently, he's with the team on a part-time basis as he finishes up the course work at Rockland Community College that will allow him to transfer to Penn State in the fall.

But he's been in constant touch with Glens Falls coach John Mayotte, who spotted him at St. Petersburg College, where Wanamaker played this season. With Glens Falls in an arms pinch, Wanamaker made his debut on Saturday, a couple of weeks before he'll join the club for good.

The start was Wanamaker's first game action since mid-May, and his first extended outing since feeling tightness in his arm working out at his Nyack home three weeks ago.

"I felt good, but I didn't feel great," Wanamaker said. "I had to work on pitches other than my fastball."

Wanamaker brushed off some early rust to throw three hit ball through six innings, striking out seven.

Mayotte is counting down the days to his return.

"He's going to be a great factor down the stretch as we try and win a title," Mayotte said.

Glens Falls scored its runs in the third, with Jake Owens and Kevin Mahoney each hitting RBI doubles.

Notes: Relief pitcher JB Skees left the team on Friday, Mayotte said. Skees started the season as the team's closer... Catcher Mark Kelly, who injured in his wrist in a game last Wednesday, will take batting practice on Tuesday.

That is the earliest he can return to the team... Brian Moran, who earned the save, was traveling to Omaha, Neb., after the game to be with his North Carolina teammates as they play in the College World Series.
