GLENS
FALLS * This highlight isn't likely to show up on any national
telecasts, and the odds of being recognized in a restaurant are a bit
shorter, but Mike Konstanty is fine with that -- in fact, he prefers it.
Because
he's playing baseball in a place he feels at home, and more
importantly, contributing. Konstanty, in his first game with the Glens
Falls Golden Eagles this season, came off the bench to drive in the
go-ahead run as Glens Falls beat Amsterdam 5-3 Wednesday night at East
Field in a NYCBL game.
Three weeks ago, playing left field for
the University at Albany in the first round of an NCAA Regional against
Arkansas, Konstanty made another highlight, one he doesn't remember
quite as fondly.
Tracking a fly ball to the wall, Konstanty
leapt, and for a moment, looked to have made a run-saving catch. But
his glove hit the wall, knocking the ball loose and popping it over the
fence for a three-run home run, giving the Razorbacks a 7-0 lead.
"I'm never going to live that one down," Konstanty said, smiling.
Konstanty
said he only looked at the replay once. But footage of the play
circulated, giving Konstanty a bit of instant fame that he took in
stride.
But as of Sunday, he didn't have a place to play this
summer. So he called Glens Falls coach John Mayotte, whom he played for
the last two summers.
Mayotte had a roster spot open after Ken
Gregory left the team to pursue an opportunity in a different league,
and he didn't hesitate to offer it to Konstanty.
"Getting Mike is like getting two or three players in one," Mayotte said. "He can play a lot of different places for us."
That
came in handy on Wednesday after catcher Mark Kelly left the game with
a wrist injury after an at-bat in the fourth inning. Joe Mercurio moved
to catcher, and Konstanty took over at first.
In the eighth, Konstanty ripped a double to right-center to break a game that had been tied at two since the fifth.
"I couldn't believe I got to the plate tonight," Konstanty said.
"That was the hit that broke the ice for us," Mayotte said.
The Golden Eagles (8-2) got two insurance runs on RBI singles by Casey Larson and Mercurio.
The
late offense gave a well-deserved win to Glens Falls starter Barry
Keiffer. The lanky, platinum-blond Texan from Midland threw eight
innings of two-hit ball.
Keiffer (3-0) struck out seven to give
him 24 in 20 innings pitched this season. After giving up a run on two
hits in the first, Keiffer settled down, showing off a nasty slider.
"He's been great," Mayotte said.
