Golden Eagles' rally falls short in loss to Watertown

GLENS FALLS -- When the Golden Eagles were still hitless in the seventh inning Friday, those in attendance began pleading with each batter to just please, finally, get a hit.

With one out in the eighth inning and Glens Falls trailing 4-0, Dan Cooke answered the call and singled to right field; the Golden Eagles (4-2) scored one in that inning and then rallied for two more in the ninth before dropping a 4-3 decision to Watertown (3-3) at East Field.

"It was like we were asleep the first seven innings," said Cooke, who plays his college ball at Gardner-Webb in Charlotte, N.C.

Cooke said Watertown's starter, Luis Castillo, was tossing a "pretty good curveball," and he sat on a fastball for the first Glens Falls hit of the game.

"I thought breaking up the no-hitter would be big," said Glens Falls coach John Mayotte.

"I figured once we got that one, we'd string some hits together," Cooke said.

The Golden Eagles did, picking up four hits in the ninth -- including another single by Cooke -- to pull within one, 4-3, with two outs. Centerfielder Casey Larson, from Kansas, struck out with runners on first and third to end the game.

Glens Falls starting pitcher Brian Moran, from the University of North Carolina, pitched five innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs. The defense behind Moran made four errors.

"We made too many mistakes early," Mayotte said. "We played unfocused for too long. I told the guys afterward that it's a challenge to play six days a week and stay focused."

Mayotte said Moran pitched well, often getting two strikes against hitters, but struggled to get that last strike.

Adam Veres pitched four strong innings in relief, allowing only one hit and no runs.

Third baseman Kevin Mahoney singled to extend the rally in the ninth, as did Rick Seltzer -- from Siena College -- and Jake Shaffer. Seltzer, Cooke and Joe Mercurio, on a fielder's choice, accounted for an RBI each.

"I liked the way we kept fighting," Mayotte said.

The Golden Eagles knocked Castillo out of the game with one out in the ninth inning and Mayotte said he felt his kids would be able to hit the Wizards' reliever, David Owes, more than they had Castillo.

Glens Falls plays every day but Monday and will host Little Falls tonight at 7 at East Field.
