The guy who never used a computer now can't survive without one.
In a year of transition for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, there's still that one constant: John Mayotte scouring the Internet, the sexagenarian pointing, clicking and soaking up every intricate statistic of the players who will make up his New York Collegiate Baseball League team this summer.
Mayotte will return for the fourth straight season to manage the wooden-bat league team, which begins play June 8 under new ownership.
Mayotte, the Hudson Falls native who lives in Florida, said he has 27 players signed for the upcoming season. (Just one player, Siena's Will Hassett, returns from last year.) He's seen about a dozen of them play. From his thorough Internet research, Mayotte compiles and distributes a weekly report, a kind of newsletter, that chronicles each player's season.
There is perhaps no one who pores over that information more than Darin Williams, who bought the team last fall. Williams ran the scoreboard during past seasons at East Field and is now the team's general manager. For the Golden Eagles, he represents the third owner in three seasons.
"Darin was the team's biggest fan," Mayotte said. "He's in it for all the right reasons."
Williams won't be manning the scoreboard and concocting playlists for between-innings music this year -- "I hope not, though sometimes I'd rather be doing that," he said, laughing -- and that's fine with him. He's got plenty on his plate right now, like locating host families. Williams said this week the team has secured 10 host families -- which provide players with a free place to live during the season -- but still needs another half dozen or so. He hosted five players last season in his basement, which turned into something of a college dorm room. He said he would prefer not to do that this season.
Meanwhile, the Saratoga Phillies, defending NYCBL champs, bring back six players from last year's title-winning squad, including middle infielder Darin Mastroianni, a first-team all-league performer. Skipper Garett Baron and his two assistants will also return.
They'll all enjoy some new frills and excitement. For one, East Side Rec will have a pair of new dugouts.
What's more, the Phillies all season will be the subject of a documentary film produced by a Los Angeles-based company. Co-owner Keith Rogers said producers from Bain Street Productions contacted Phillies marketing director John Colucci, who lives in California, with the initial idea. Rogers said the documentary's final cut will be more than two hours long and pitched to film festivals across the country.
"It's a different kind of idea for marketing the team," Rogers said.
Colleen Carlson, the Phillies' marketing and housing coordinator, said the team still needs "a few" host families.
