Eagles can't solve Little Falls

Wednesday's games: Little Falls 6, Golden Eagles 5; Little Falls 6, Golden Eagles 3
Eagles' next game: Host Amsterdam today at East Field, 7 p.m.
Eagles extra: The Eagles have lost three straight games -- all to the Diamond Miners.
GLENS FALLS -- Joe Baker's two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh inning not only propelled the Little Falls Diamond Miners to a 6-5 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, it set the tone for the second game victory, too, keeping Little Falls perfect against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles in six games this season.
"I don't know that we are in their head, but every time we play them we seem to have a good day and they struggle a little bit," said Baker, who went 2-for-5 with four RBIs in the doubleheader. "I'm sure there was a little carryover into the second game because we beat them in the ninth inning (Tuesday), and then we beat them in the seventh inning today, so I'm sure it sticks with them a little bit."
But not so much as to have the Eagles thinking Little Falls (21-12) cannot be beat.
Quite the contrary.
Having played several doubleheaders over the last week, the Eagles (19-16) were forced to start Greg Koehler, who has not thrown many innings this season, in the second game. Koehler struggled with his command, allowing three runs on seven walks, two hit batsmen and no hits in getting five outs as the Miners scuffled their way to a 6-1 lead on three hits after four innings.
"There is a little bit of a carryover from one game to the next," Golden Eagles catcher Brent McWhorter said. "Losing that first game, it stings for a bit, especially when they do it twice in a row. But it's a new game, and once a new game starts, you kind of forget about what happened the game before and concentrate on what we need to do."
What they needed to do was scratch together some runs and put themselves in position to get back into the game, and Golden Eagles coach John Mayotte was pleased with his team's ability to do that -- scoring once in the second inning on Dallas Cawiezell's RBI single, and getting runners in scoring position in the second, third (bases loaded) and fourth innings.
Nate Recknagel's one-out solo home run to left in the fifth was followed by Ryan Conan's double and Chris Shehan's RBI single. Shehan went to third on a throwing error, where he was stranded.
The Eagles got Bryan Tews to third with two outs in the sixth, and they got the tying run to the plate in the seventh but failed to get a timely hit.
The Miners scored 12 runs on nine hits over the two games. The Eagles rapped out at least nine hits in both games.
"A tough loss is a tough loss, but you have to move on from it," said Mayotte, whose team is in position to make the NYCBL playoffs, but has not yet clinched a berth. "The key for us is to not get into an extended losing streak -- then it might get into their heads a little bit."
