Eagles' LaFleur tosses no-hitter

Published on 7/17/2006

GLENS FALLS -- A no-hitter, anywhere, any time, is a remarkable feat.

What was unusual about Mike LaFleur's no-hitter on Sunday was that he'd never thrown one before. He'd come all the way from youth baseball to college without a taste.

"I'm not a real power pitcher,'' LaFleur said. "I just let my defense work.''

His seven hitless innings lifted the Glens Falls Golden Eagles to a 2-0 victory over Bolivar in the first game of a doubleheader at East Field. Bolivar won the second game, 5-4.

It would be hard to call LaFleur's performance dominating. He walked three, hit two batters, tossed a wild pitch and struck out just one batter. But he kept the ball down and used his pitches well, getting 12 ground outs and two double plays.

"Pitching no-hitters is a combination of a lot of things,'' manager John Mayotte said. "You've not only got to have really good command, you've got to be fortunate and have the defense play well behind you and make some good plays. I thought we did all of those things for Mike.

"He has deceiving stuff, (and) today I thought he had good command. There were a lot of ground balls, and that's his forte. The ball sinks and moves and darts. He's deceptive. The ball doesn't sit still when he's out there.''

LaFleur didn't have the best of control early on. He got out of a first-and-second situation in the second inning with a double play ball. He relied on a slider and off-speed pitches and let his infielders do the work, ending the game with a seventh-inning double play.

"My defense played great behind me,'' he said. "I've been throwing pretty well lately, but I haven't been working through my tough innings. Today I finally pushed through.''

It was the first no-hitter in Golden Eagles history, and only the fourth pitched at East Field in 20 years of professional and summer college baseball.

The Golden Eagles had only two hits in the game, but made the most of their opportunities. Mike Consolmagno led off the first with a walk, stole a base and later scored on Bryan Tews' ground out. In the fifth, Brent McWhorter singled and later scored on Consolmagno's sacrifice fly.

Bolivar quickly jumped on top in the second game with a run in the first and three more in the second. With their pitching depleted by back-to-back doubleheaders, the Eagles had Tews, their regular shortstop, pitch the bulk of the game.

Tews did very well, allowing one unearned run in 5-2/3 innings. The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the seventh on Nate Recknagel's RBI double and Dallas Cawiezell's RBI single, but left the potential tying run on base.

Notes: The Golden Eagles play their next home game on Wednesday in a noon doubleheader. ... The 20 years of baseball at East Field covers nine by the Glens Falls Tigers/White Sox of the Eastern League, one by the Glens Falls Redbirds of the New York-Penn League, seven by the Adirondack Lumberjacks of the Northern and Northeast leagues and three by the Golden Eagles.
