SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Up until Monday night, the mind of Saratoga Phillies shortstop Darin Mastroianni was as cloudy as the sky hovering over the Capital Region the last few weeks.
After going 4-for-15 over the weekend, the senior from Southern Indiana hit a mental block.
So he did what any good player would do. He worked harder.
"Go to BP (batting practice)," Mastroianni said. "And stop worrying. Let my hands fly."
After driving in the Phillies' first two runs off a hard-hit triple in the first inning, the Huntersville, N.C., native finished with three hits, three stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBIs as Saratoga defeated Glens Falls in a New York Collegiate Baseball League game 11-0 at East Side Rec.
"Sometimes you just get pitches to hit," Mastroianni said.
"Darin's been great all season; it's an all-star season," Saratoga coach Garett Baron said. "He's a lot happier tonight."
To lead off the fourth inning, Mastroianni reached base with a single, stole second and third base and scored his first run of the evening off a single by John Scaglione. The Phillies were 5-for-5 on stolen bases.
"It's a part of the way the team plays," Mastroianni said. "We put pressure on the defense. Make them make the mistake."
Glens Falls fell into that trap, making six errors.
"That's the formula to failure," Glens Falls coach John Mayotte said.
The win put the Phillies at 14-8 while Glens Falls fell to 13-7.
Clifton Park native and Northeastern junior pitcher Trevor Smith (4-0) earned the win after throwing a two-hitter, with one walk and five strikeouts, through six innings.
"Trevor has been tough," Baron said. "It was a good team win. Our defense has been improving each game."
Scaglione showed that improvement when he dashed to snatch up Glens Falls' catcher Brent McWhorter's bunt just feet from home plate to throw him out at first in the fourth.
Shortstop Bryan Tews had both Glens Falls' hits, going 2-for-4, including a double in the third.
Though the Golden Eagles are still ahead in the division and the league standings, Mayotte said he was concerned after watching the shutout loss.
"I don't worry about wins and losses," the coach said, looking out onto the field. "I worry about whether we're playing good. We have to rectify the second half of the season."
Both teams will travel on Wednesday as the Golden Eagles will take on Elmira while the Phillies will face Geneva. The NYCBL All-Star game is Thursday at Watertown.
Note: The game was stopped midway through the fourth inning because of lighting. After a short rain storm ensued, adding 45 minutes to the delay, the game resumed.
