GLENS FALLS -- Backed by near-flawless defense, Glens Falls left-hander Matt McKissick retired the first 15 batters he faced en route to a complete-game 2-1 victory Tuesday evening over the Amsterdam Mohawks at East Field.
McKissick threw 87 pitches as he faced just two batters over the limit of 27, scattering five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. He retired the side in order seven times.
The Golden Eagles also turned two double plays as they improved to 12-5 in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The game lasted an 1 hour, 51 minutes.
"My slider wasn't working, but as long as I can mix up my fastball and change-up, I can keep them off-balance," said McKissick (3-1), who will be a senior at the University of New Orleans in the fall. "Eighty-seven pitches is my record for a nine-inning game. I didn't think I'd have my best stuff today, but I was able to keep 'em guessing."
"He's an ideal pitcher to play behind," Glens Falls manager John Mayotte said. "He works quickly, he has good command and that keeps the defense on its toes. When guys work fast and throw strikes, fielders respond to that."
Mike Arensdorff hit a double and a single and scored both of the Golden Eagles' runs. In the second inning, the outfielder from Valparaiso belted a full-count double to right field, then scored on Ryan Conan's full-count, line-drive single to left.
In the fourth, Arensdorff led off with a base hit, was bunted over to second, reached third on a passed ball, and scored on Brent McWhorter's double to deep left field for a 2-0 lead.
Those were the only two runs allowed by Amsterdam starter Nick DeMidio, a former CBA of Albany standout who plays at the College of St. Rose. DeMidio was touched for seven hits in seven innings, but escaped with limited damage. Former Fonda standout Eric Tylutki pitched a perfect eighth.
"The other kid (DeMidio) pitched a real effective game, too," Mayotte said. "The way the wind was blowing in today, we knew we'd have to manufacture runs. It was that type of game -- hopefully get a run or two and eek out a win."
The Mohawks (8-9) scored their only run unearned in the sixth inning, after Glens Falls had ended the previous two innings with double plays.
Amsterdam's Mario Williams beat out a slow roller for an infield single, then came all the way around to score on back-to-back throwing errors as he attempted a steal.
McKissick and his defense sat down 12 of the next 13 Amsterdam batters to finish the game. Williams led the Mohawks with two singles.
"Our defense has been solid all year -- they play hard behind me," McKissick said. "Those two double-play balls there picked me up big-time. Everybody's shocked it was such a quick game."
"He's a finesse-type guy, but if you go looking for his off-speed stuff, he can throw the fastball," Mayotte said of McKissick. "He's a very cerebral kid on the mound."
McKissick's college suffered damage and flooding from Hurricane Katrina last summer, and they attended classes at New Mexico State for a semester. The Privateers had to play part of their season at an alternate field 20 minutes from their home park after returning to New Orleans this spring.
Glens Falls is scheduled to host the Little Falls Diamond Miners today and the Saratoga Phillies on Friday. Both games are set for 7 p.m.
