Eagles find their swing

Score 11 runs one night after nearly getting no hits

Published on 6/23/2006

GLENS FALLS -- With different comings and goings through the season, Glens Falls coach John Mayotte knows that any team in the New York Collegiate Baseball League can't afford to go on any slumps.

Hosting the Elmira Pioneers the night after his Golden Eagles mustered one hit aganst Saratoga Phillies pitcher Trevor Smith, Mayotte knew the team had to bounce back.

"When you get shut down like we did, you come back and go to work," he said.

The Golden Eagles did just that on Thursday in their 11-1 win, belting out 13 hits. Valparaiso three-sport athlete Dallas Cawiezell went 4-for-4 and hit a solo homer in the seventh inning.

With the win, the Golden Eagles (8-4) are tied for first in the NYCBL's East Division with Little Falls, whom they play on the road tonight.

Glens Falls scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by first baseman Nate Recknagel's two-run single. In the sixth inning, Glens Falls loaded the bases with three singles, which sent Elmira (4-7) starting pitcher Tom Laughlin to the dugout. Relief pitcher Greg Lane walked the next batter to score Cawiezell, then gave up a two-run single to right fielder Mike Arensdorff.

"Those things come in circles," Mayotte said. "We were due today. We moved runs over and that was key."

Glens Falls starting pitcher Ethan Silverstein, a junior at Brown University, picked his spots, striking out seven en route to a two-hitter through six innings. Silverstein put Arensdorff to work, sending four fly balls his way.

Note: The Golden Eagles would like to send a thank you to Mrs. Thompson's second grade class and music teacher Miss Ellis from Queensbury Elementary School for their rendition of the National Anthem on Wednesday night.
