The Golden Eagles' Bryan Twes (2) nearly gets out of a pickle between first and second base, but is ultimately tagged out by Saratoga Phillies infielder John Scaglione (19) during Wednesday night's game at East Field.

GLENS FALLS -- Saratoga right fielder Donnie Webb got a great jump on Nate Recknagel's one-out line drive into right-center field, dove to his right and made a spectacular, back-handed grab of the ball just before it hit the East Field grass.
Or so the Oklahoma State junior thought.
The remarkable catch was ruled a trap. Jonathan White bounded home from third. And in that five-second span, Phillies pitcher Trevor Smith lost his no-hit and shutout-bid with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
That call was about the only thing that went the way of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, whose bats were defused in a 6-1 loss to the Phillies on Wednesday.
"Just like I told everybody else -- I caught the ball," Webb said. "If I would have dropped it, I wouldn't have run into the infield and screamed at the umpire like I did. I was going crazy."
Webb was adamant in his argument, but to no avail. Smith (3-0) had to be satisfied with a complete-game one-hitter in what Glens Falls coach John Mayotte called a methodically well-pitched game -- by both starting pitchers.
Recknagel, who would not have complained had has his hit been ruled a catch, said it was a flat-out embarrassment.
"He may have caught it, he might not have caught it, but at the end of the day, we have one hit on the board and no matter what, when you have one hit on the board, it's embarrassing," Recknagel said. "We ruined the kid's no-hitter, but he pitched a helluva game and he deserves that win. My hat's off to him.
"If he was my teammate," Recknagel said, "I would wish that was ruled a catch."
Smith, who kept the Eagles (7-4) off balance predominantly with his fastball, walked six and struck out five. He benefitted from two double plays among the solid defense behind him -- including a game-ending double play two pitches after losing his no-hitter.
Glens Falls starter Matt McKissick, who took a no-hitter of his own into the fifth inning, did not have as much help from his defense as the Phillies (4-6) scored two unearned runs in the third inning and another in the fourth.
Saratoga knocked McKissick out of the game with three runs on five hits in the eighth inning -- including Chris Dove's two-run, two-out single to right. Kyle Redmon relieved and allowed Cam Brown's RBI single before he picked off Brown to end the inning.
From that point, it was a matter of whether Smith could get the final six outs.
"I didn't start thinking about the no-hitter until after the seventh inning," Smith said. "I would have like to have gotten that call, but after the hit you feel the weight lifted off your shoulders, and you start working on the next batter."
Webb wasn't as diplomatic.
"Trevor pitched an outstanding game, he hit his spots and we backed him up defensively," Webb said. "He pitched a no-hitter. The umpire saw something different."
