GLENS FALLS -- On Friday night, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles got to experience the disappointment that the rest of the Mountain West Conference felt this spring after they faced Jordan Muir.
Muir, who just finished his first season at Brigham Young University, showed why he was selected a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American by winning his second start in as many tries for Little Falls in a 3-1 Diamond Miners win at East Field.
Muir, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound right-hander, finished his college season with a 6-0 record, a 3.97 earned run average and 57 strikeouts. He had great command Friday, striking out seven, walking two and hitting three batters in seven innings.
"My off-speed pitches were working well tonight," Muir said. "My slider was my strongest. Usually, I was setting up guys for that, mostly righties, but it was all going pretty good."
Glens Falls manager John Mayotte concurred.
"That kid's a hell of a pitcher," Mayotte said. "He had great command of his pitches, probably the best of anyone we've seen so far."
Glens Falls (6-2) scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Mejia reached on a fielder's choice. He stole second and reached third on a catcher's error. Jonathan White then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Mejia.
Little Falls (4-1) took the lead in the fourth. Tommy Fitzgerald bunted for a single and moved to second on the play after an error. Jimmy Baker followed with a single, moving Fitzgerald to third. A wild pitch scored Fitzgerald and moved Baker to second. Kevin Fujii's double then scored Baker.
The Diamond Miners added an insurance run in the fifth when Ryan Overland hit the team's third consecutive single to score Baker.
The Eagles threatened in the ninth when Mike Arensdorff hit a one-out single to right field and Bryan Tews followed with an infield single. They both advanced on a fielder's choice, but reliever Matt Bowman struck out Chad Knight to end the game.
"He stayed ahead in the count," Mayotte said of Muir, "but the defense made some nice plays behind him, too. Their center fielder went to the wall to catch White's ball in the sixth, and their first baseman caught a line drive of Tews. Both those would have put us back in the game. It was one of those days where you hit the ball hard, but they made the plays."
