Eagles thump Phillies

Glens Falls now 5-1 on season

Published on 6/15/2006

SARATOGA SPRINGS - For the second straight night, everyone in the Glens Falls lineup contributed something offensively, as the Golden Eagles routed the Saratoga Phillies, 14-6, in a New York Collegiate Baseball League game at East Side Rec on Wednesday.

The win improved the Eagles' record to 5-1, while Saratoga fell to 2-3.

Glens Falls took advantage of starting pitcher Griff Occhigressi's second-inning struggles to score four runs on three hits. The game was never in doubt afterward.

Nate Recknagel and Mike Arensdorff led off the second with consecutive walks. Bryan Tews then loaded the bases with the first of his three singles for the night. Brent McWhorter then hit a solid two-run single to center field. Two batters later, Dallas Cawiezell also singled to center for the third run.

"I knew he was having trouble finding the zone, so I was just trying to find a pitch to hit, and I got one right down the middle,'' said McWhorter, who finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Glens Falls took a 4-0 lead in the third on McWhorter's second RBI single, but Saratoga countered with two in the bottom half of the inning.

The Eagles put things out of reach with three more runs in the fourth.

Cawiezell (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) added some pizzazz to the long night with a towering two-run home run over the left field fence that traveled approximately 360 feet. It was his second home run of the season.

"He's been a catalyst for us the last few games,'' Glens Falls manager John Mayotte said of Cawiezell. "When he hits (the homers), they go. But we're getting contributions up and down the lineup.''

"It's so contagious,'' McWhorter said of the Eagles' 13 hits against Saratoga. "It seems like once one person hits, everybody catches on and follows.''

Donnie Webb and Darin Mastroianni each went 3-for-4 to lead the Phillies, with Webb scoring three times and Mastroianni's big contribution coming on a two-run triple in the fourth.
