GLENS FALLS -- The Golden Eagles' win Tuesday night would have driven an Ohio State fan nuts.
Amsterdam wasn't too crazy about it, either.
Three University of Michigan players that joined Glens Falls on Monday were put into action Tuesday, forming the battery for eight of the nine innings in the Golden Eagles 7-5 win over the Mohawks in a New York Collegiate Baseball League East Division game at East Field.
Starting pitcher Dan Lentz tossed four innings before giving way to Ben Jenzen, who got the win over the next four innings. They were pitching to catcher Nate Rechknagel. Dallas Cawiezell came on in the ninth to earn the save.
"We've only had 16 guys until tonight, and all three Michigan guys were ready, and thank God for that because this gave us an option," Glens Falls manager John Mayotte said. "Cawiezell's been really good in that closer role, so we thought if they could give us eight innings, we'd be all right. Jenzen pitched well."
The Golden Eagles (4-1) also got a run, hit or RBI from every player in the batting order, and were also opportunistic, as they scored four unearned runs.
"I think they're buying into it," Mayotte said of his philosophy of manufacturing runs however necessary. "Guys haven't tried to carry us themselves, but it's a marathon and we're just getting out of the gate now. It's a long season yet."
But the signs are positive.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Glens Falls responded with two runs, thanks to an RBI single by Jonathan White and a run by White on a two-base throwing error.
Amsterdam (0-4) tied it at 2-2 in the top of the third, but again the Eagles responded, with Bryan Tews' single to center fielder scoring White from second.
After the teams traded runs and Amsterdam went ahead 4-3, Glens Falls took the lead for good in the fifth when two consecutive fielding errors by second baseman Victor Tolentino allowed Mike Arensdorff and Tews to eventually score.
Rechknagel's RBI single to right-center field knocked in Junior Jejia to make it 6-4 in the sixth. The Eagles added their final run in the seventh on another two-base throwing error.
Saratoga Springs High School graduate Vince Riggi hit an RBI double to deep left field to make it 7-5, but Janzen struck out Tolentino and forced Ryan Connolly into a popout to end the inning.
Second baseman Chad Knight went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Eagles.
