Eagles sweep Wizards

Published on 6/12/2006

GLENS FALLS -- Your first impression of 6-foot-6, 240-pound Dallas Cawiezell is that he's built like a football player.

But he wears a baseball uniform. That gives him the look of an outfielder, or a first baseman.

Actually, he's a pitcher. But on Sunday at East Field, Cawiezell won a game with both his pitching and his hitting.

Cawiezell hit a two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Glens Falls Golden Eagles a 3-1 victory over Watertown in the first game of a doubleheader. He had pitched the top of the ninth, so he also picked up the win.

Glens Falls went on complete the sweep with a 9-5 victory over Watertown in the second game.

The Golden Eagles are working with a 16-man roster as they wait for players to report. Manager John Mayotte has been using Cawiezell as a designated hitter, for lack of anyone else to fill the role.

Cawiezell, who converted to pitching after joining Valparaiso, doesn't mind at all. He knows his future in baseball lies with pitching, but doesn't want to put the bats away.

"I love to hit,'' Cawiezell said. "I can't ever see giving up hitting. It's part of the game to me.''

He struggled at the plate for most of Sunday, striking out five times. Still, he came through in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and Chad Knight on second base in a 1-1 game. He got all of his considerable strength into a swing at a 1-0 fastball and sent it over the wall in left-center field, with plenty of room to spare.

"I got that one pitch and put a good swing on it,'' he said. "That was pretty much my day. I was pretty much (looking for) that pitch in that spot, and I got it.''

It's not hard to figure out why Valparaiso wanted to convert Cawiezell into a pitcher. He throws hard, in the 90 mph range, which gives him potential to develop further.

"He's one of those guys who's not a clone of (a prototypical) pitcher, but he's very, very effective,'' manager John Mayotte said. "The sky's the limit in terms of his potential.''

The Eagles scored eight runs in the first two innings to quickly take control of the nightcap. Junior Mejia's RBI-double and Mike Arensdorff's run-scoring single were the key hits in a five-run first inning, when Watertown starter Justin Alberson left with an injury after four batters.

Bryan Tews, Arensdorff and Brent McWhorter singled in runs in the second inning to give Glens Falls an 8-0 lead.

Will Hassett pitched five innings for the victory, allowing only two hits. But it was a less-than-ideal outing from a pitching and fielding perspective, with seven walks, three wild pitches, two errors and a hit batsman slowing up the effort.
