GLENS FALLS --- In one of the best pitching performances by the Glens Falls Golden Eagles this season, LeMoyne College junior pitcher Mike Falasca threw nine strikeouts, allowing five hits and two runs, to lead the Eagles to a 9-3 win over Watertown in a New York Collegiate Baseball League game Thursday at East Field.
"I tried to mix up my speed, not try to throw all fastballs because I know this is a good hitting team," Falasca said. "I think the fastball and my changeup worked well for me."
In his sixth start of the year, Falasca (4-0) pitched a shutout game through six innings, allowing only two hits until back-to-back doubles in the seventh inning led to two runs scored on three hits.
Falasca said he was disappointed when he gave up the two runs.
"That's when (catcher Josh) Burt came up to me and told me to start going in on them," Falasca said.
Former Queensbury standout and Cortland right-handed pitcher Justin Mattes got the save after relieving Falasca in the ninth.
The Eagles (16-27) got multiple hits from six players, highlighted by first baseman Dan Hughes who hit a single, a solo home run in the second and scored two runs. Another Queensbury native, third baseman Will Groff, had two hits, two RBIs and one run scored.
Glens Falls will try to win its second in a row when it hosts Amsterdam at East Field tonight at 7.
Note: The Golden Eagles would like to wish a speedy recovery to batboy Zach Williams, who was accidentally struck on the head by a batter who was warming up during a game at East Field on Tuesday. Williams, 8, is from Glens Falls.
