Golden Eagles split pair

Published on 7/18/2005

GLENS FALLS -- Baseball is not always fair, but the oddities of the game have a way of evening out.

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles used heads-up baserunning and a key error to win the front end of a doubleheader Sunday, a game they could have easily lost. They took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the second game before losing a game they might have won.

In the end, they got about what they deserved -- a split of Sunday's doubleheader against the Wayne County Raptors at East Field.

Shaun McNamara's complete-game five-hitter led the Eagles to a 3-2 victory over Wayne County in the first game. Wayne County used three pitchers to hold off Glens Falls in the nightcap, 3-1.

The Golden Eagles had reason to feel good about their pitching Sunday, having allowed just seven hits in two games. Second-game starter Mike Salivar didn't allow any hits in four innings, but suffered from a five-walk first inning.

The number zero figured prominently in Sunday's game. McNamara came into the first game with a 0-0 record in seven starts. He's pitched well this summer, but hasn't gotten a lot out of it.

"It's been a bit frustrating, but baseball is a tough game,'' McNamara said. "On the whole, I felt pretty good. It was nice to get a one-run win.''

The victory was helped greatly by an odd play in the bottom of the first.

Ryan Saltzgaber led off with an infield single and Will Groff followed with a bunt single that he beat out with a slide at first base. Saltzgaber rounded second on that play and slowly crept toward third before breaking into a run. Pitcher Jay Crouse, who had the ball, made a throw that was late and wild.

"I was watching the guy with the ball and he wasn't paying attention to me,'' Saltzgaber said. "I beat the throw there, and kind of wondered why he threw the ball.''

Saltzgaber scored and Groff ended up at third. Groff scored on a ground out one play later. The Eagles added a third run in the second inning when Tony Clausen singled home Pat Ferguson.

Would the Eagles have won that game without the baserunning incident? Maybe. They did have two singles later in the first inning.

But maybe not. Those singles came with two outs, and Wayne County scored twice with the help of some big hits. McNamara could have been a hard-luck loser despite being the best pitcher.

In the second game, it was the Eagles who hit a snag in the first inning. Salivar came out throwing hard, but couldn't find the plate. Wayne County took a 2-0 lead without hitting the ball off the infield.

From then on, the Eagles outpitched Wayne County. Salivar struck out six before leaving after four innings. The Raptors didn't get a hit until sixth inning, when Damion Overstreet blooped an RBI single into left field.

Salivar was making his first start of the summer.

"Maybe he was a little too excited and struggled with his command,'' manager John Mayotte said. "He's got great stuff. They didn't hurt him with the bat.''

The Eagles didn't have a lot of success against the Wayne County pitchers, but worked out a run in the fourth on Clausen's triple and Danny Hughes' RBI ground out. If not for the first-inning wildness, the outcome might have been different.
