Golden Eagles win two

Published on 7/17/2005

GLENS FALLS -- Some might call Genesee Valley's Josh Ades a "junkball pitcher."

But one man's junk is another man's treasure, and the Glens Falls Golden Eagles found Ades' steady diet of curveballs and breaking balls just to their liking, as Glens Falls topped Genesee Valley, 7-1, in the first game of a New York Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader Saturday at East Field.

The good times kept rolling in the second game, as Glens Falls (11-20) shut out the RiverBats, 4-0.

Glens Falls didn't take long to figure out Ades, scoring two runs in each of the second and third innings and adding three in the fourth.

Tony Clausen started things by reaching first on left fielder Jaime Schild's error. He stole second, moved to third on Darren Clark's fielder's choice and scored on Nick Valdez's single to center field.

It was one of three RBIs for Valdez, the catcher from Pima Community College in Arizona. Valdez later scored on Shaun Hagey's single to left field.

"I felt like our team is really starting to get it together," Valdez said. "I think it's because of coach (John) Mayotte; he's been on us lately in a positive way. He wants to get the most out of us."

It worked against Genesee Valley (10-22), with Glens Falls getting 22 hits between the two games, solid defense and impressive pitching.

"We're doing the little things now," Mayotte said. "How many times tonight did we move the man over successfully and get him in with a sacrifice fly? Now we're getting those quality at-bats. In the beginning of the year we were wasting our at-bats."

In the third inning of the first game, the Golden Eagles led off with two consecutive singles by Danny Hughes and Clausen. Clark sacrificed to move them both over one base and Valdez ripped a long single down the left-field line to score them.

"I feel like my work ethic has improved this summer under coach Mayotte," Valdez said. "He's always stressing you'll get out of this game what you put into it."

Will Groff's second successful bunt single of the game led off the fourth-inning scoring. He later came home on a three-base error. Hughes added an RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Clark scored Hughes.

Mike Falasca, a senior-to-be at LeMoyne, pitched six innings and struck out six in notching the win.

In the nightcap, Genesee Valley pitcher Ryan Naughton walked leadoff batter Ryan Saltzgaber -- his only walk of the game -- and it turned out to be costly. Saltzgaber moved to second on Clausen's single and then scored on Hughes' single to center field. Clausen moved to third on Hughes' single and scored on a fielder's choice by Clark.

It was all the lead Brian Johnson, a right-hander from Manatee Junior College, would need. Johnson went the distance, walking none and striking out five.

"We're getting good defense, better pitching, timely hitting -- things like that will happen when you're winning," Mayotte said.

Saltzgaber had a strong second game, adding two singles and the defensive play of the night at shortstop when he dove to his left to snag a line drive by Jeff Schwegler in the fourth inning.

"When you play good defense, it makes everyone a little more comfortable at the plate because you know you can stop them when you get back out there," Saltzgaber said.
