Eagles nip Mohawks

Published on 7/16/2005

AMSTERDAM -- The Glens Falls Eagles have been on the wrong side of too many one-run games this season.

On Friday, they got it right.

O.J. Dechristofano tossed a complete-game two-hitter and Ryan Saltzgaber scored on a wild pitch sending the Eagles to a 1-0 road victory over the Amsterdam Mohawks.

Both teams were held to two hits.

"There wasn't much offensive excitement, but the pitchers just absolutely dominated," Glens Falls coach John Mayotte said. "We have lost enough one-run games this year, it's nice to win another one."

Saltzgaber reached on a two-base error when his ground ball to third found its way into the left-field corner. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came home when losing pitcher Mark Suchowiecki uncorked a wild pitch.

The Eagles will play four games over the next two days, making up rainouts against both Genesee Valley and Wayne County with doubleheaders at East Field today and Sunday, both beginning at 5 p.m.

Solid pitching like Friday's would be extremely helpful.

"It was just a great pitching performance," Mayotte said.
