GLENS FALLS -- There were only three words Glens Falls Golden Eagles outfielder Danny Hughes could say after his team's 2-1 win over Plattsburgh in the second game of a doubleheader at East Field Thursday: "It's about time."
Hughes hit a fly ball into right field to score Josh Cox in the bottom of the eighth inning to end a three-game losing streak for the Eagles. With bases loaded and no outs, Plattsburgh played the outfield very shallow and Hughes blasted the ball over the right fielder's head.
"It was a tough game, both teams were battling all game and it feels good to get a win when we had to," Hughes said. "We didn't want to get swept two days in a row."
Cox, the leadoff hitter in the top of the eighth, was walked and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Saltzgaber caused two Plattsburgh errors. When Cox ran for second, the ball was thrown over the second baseman's head. Then, when Cox sprinted towards third and looked to continue on to home plate, the outfielder threw the ball over the catcher's head. Cox hesitated for a moment, then stayed at third while Saltzgaber advanced to second.
The win improved the Eagles' record to 7-19.
Former Queensbury standout Justin Mattes relieved newcomer Mike Falasca in the top of the seventh and got the win after pitching two solid innings, in which he allowed only two hits.
"I wanted to pitch shutout innings," Mattes said. "It's great to get things started for us."
Falasca, a junior pitcher at Lemoyne, pitched six innings, giving up five hits but surely controled the tempo on the mound, forcing Plattsburgh, which had 13 hits in the first game, to hit grounder and fly balls for easy outs.
"I thought Mike pitched a great game," Mattes said.
Plattsburgh scored in the first inning and Hughes scored in the second off a double by Pat Ferguson to tie the game at 1-1.
In the first game, the Eagles got off to a rough start, as the defense had two errors and starting pitcher Jim Dougher gave up eight hits in the first three innings to give the Thunder a 6-0 lead. Plattsburgh went on to win 7-3.
The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the sixth, however, and scored three runs on four hits. Mike Konstanty and Tony Clausen each had two hits and a run scored in the loss. Both of Konstanty's hits were doubles.
On the day, Hughes had three hits, two runs and the game-winning RBI.
The Eagles will host the Saratoga Phillies today at East Field at 7 p.m.. The Phillies have won the last three games against the Eagles.
