Phillies rip Eagles

Published on 6/29/2005

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The Green Wave rolled into Saratoga, and the Phillies rolled over Glens Falls in New York Collegiate Baseball League action on Tuesday night.

Saratoga (8-9), which added two players from the Tulane University baseball team, pounded out 12 hits in a 11-2 runaway at East Side Rec.

Tulane teammates Robbie Whitman and Grayden Grenier joined the Phils this week after the Green Wave was knocked out of last week's College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The pair went a combined 3-for-7 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored at the top of Saratoga's lineup. They also gave Phillies coach John Fitzgerald needed options throughout the rest of the batting order.

"The addition of Robbie Whitman and Grayden Grenier is going to help the team," Fitzgerald said. "They can swing the bat pretty well. Both can run pretty well, and both play defense.

"That's going to give us a little more firepower. Now some guys who were struggling maybe can take a day or so off. Or down the road if we have guys down the road struggle a little bit we can sit them down to get their heads back on right, and we won't lose anything offensively."

The Phils got all the offense they needed in the sixth inning.

Glens Falls (2-14) led 2-1 through five innings with single runs in the first and fifth innings, but Saratoga batted around on just three hits, and a crucial error opened the door for a six-run rally.

The big inning started innocently with a fly ball to center, then Glens Falls starter O.J. DeChristofano walked three of the last six batters he faced, and Saratoga made the most of singles by Fuller Smith, Grenier and Adam Cronk. DeChristofano would have gotten out of the inning with one earned run, though, if Glens Falls had not committed its first error of the game on a ground ball by Chris Matesich.

Saratoga added three more runs in the seventh, but the big blow was an RBI triple by Smith, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. The Phils padded their lead in the eighth with Smith's RBI single to score Leo Corvino (2-for-3, three runs).

Fitzgerald said DeChristofano, who pitched well just last week in a 2-1 loss to the Phillies, may have had some physical difficulties on Tuesday.

"O.J. again had good stuff, I thought," Fitzgerald said. "It looked like he tweaked a buttock or a (hamstring) or something like that, and that led to his loss of command."

Glens Falls coach John Mayotte, who did make a mound visit to check his ace's condition in the middle innings, said the ailment was not to blame for DeChristofano's control problems. On the other side, Michael Schwimmer dominated the Golden Eagles with 10 strikeouts and two walks in eight innings of work. The two Glens Falls runs were unearned, and Schwimmer allowed Fitzgerald to give his bullpen the night off.

"It was a nice effort, because (Schwimmer) did give us eight innings," Fitzgerald said. "Once again, we're in a week when we go Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and four on the weekend. Pitching is a premium, and as you saw from some of the scores this weekend, you can run out if it when you have that many games in a row.

"For us to get eight innings from our starter on Tuesday was very big."

Saratoga travels to face Mohawk Valley tonight while Glens Falls is home against Plattsburgh at East Field at 7 p.m.
