True team effort made event possible

For one week in May, Glens Falls sports enthusiasts were enthralled with a baseball extravaganza unheard of in this region. A week of exciting competition with eight Division III college teams competing for a national championship.
This unique competition was brought to this area by Charles Adams of the Golden Eagles and hundreds of local volunteers. We saw eight major college teams battling to win the title of champions.
This week was full of excitement, defeats and glorious victories. This tournament was a gamble on Mr. Adams’ part, but the event was well-planned and it succeeded in spite of foul weather (six days of rain) and lower-than-expected attendance.
The success of this adventure started with Adams and David Chamberlain, the league’s baseball commissioner, and hundreds of paid volunteers such as Skidmore College and Adirondack Community College, plus the Glens Falls Rotary Club, booster clubs, the Queensbury Hotel and the Ramada Inn. People like Hal Payne, who coordinated hospitality for all teams and Phil Morse, who brought the Red Sox World Series Cup to Glens Falls, made it possible. Each team also had a personal host to care for them day and night.
In addition, several local sponsors gave time and dollars to this event. Warren County also dedicated some of the county bed tax. Bob Bogdan, a local resident, coordinated all volunteers and baseball operations.
This whole endeavor was highly successful, but many people said it could not be done. Yet, we did it. This community must take note of what can be done if we all work together. This tournament will be back again next year, and we are ready. This same spirit of cooperation can be achieved in politics, economics, police, firematics and symphony and theater, not just sports. The ball has started, let’s keep it rolling.
