Eagles go scoreless, get swept

Published on 6/26/2005

GLENS FALLS -- Saturday night at East Field was all about pitching.

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles got a little more. The Allegany County Nitros just had too much.

The Nitros limited Glens Falls to four hits in 14 innings to sweep both ends of a New York Collegiate Baseball League double-header by scores of 5-0 and 4-0.

Allegany County's pitching staff has shut out five of its last eight opponents, including the last three straight.

On Saturday, the Nitros (9-6) got a little help from Glens Falls' offense.

"I'm really upset," Glens Falls coach John Mayotte said. "I really thought we turned a corner yesterday (a 5-3 win), and I was really looking forward to today. But we just regressed again today.

"We make some of the easiest outs in history. We strike out. We pop up. We don't put any pressure on the defense. We've done it day in and day out. I preach that we have to do something differently to win with wood. I've done a poor job of coaching them, I think.

"It's my fault, I guess," he added.

Glens Falls (2-11) has scored one run or fewer in eight of its 13 games this year.

In Saturday's first game, Allegany starter Anthony Mehling allowed just one hit, Darren Clark's single to right field in the fifth. The only other Glens Falls baserunner in the loss came on a strikeout/passed ball in the second.

In the nightcap, Queensbury's Will Groff garnered two of the Eagles' three hits, including a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh. But Glens Falls could not make Allegany's Mike Stawski pay for the five walks he yielded to go along with the three hits he allowed.

Glens Falls starter Matt Trausch scattered 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings in the first game, but he was victimized by a couple of errors that produced three unearned runs.

In game two, Glens Falls welcomed the arrival of another live arm to its pitching staff. Tompkins Community College's T.J. O'Leary, who got a tryout with the team earlier in the day, pitched three innings of one-hit relief.

But the bigger story of the day was the combination of Mehling and Stawski.

The latter improved to 2-0 with his second shutout of the season to emerge as the ace of a staff that started Saturday a game out of first place in the NYCBL's West Division.

"When we first started, I expected to have some low scoring games, and then the first season we had some 10-9 games and that kind of stuff," Allegany coach Robbie Wilson said. "So this was kind of more what I expected. Of course, you don't expect to go 23 innings in a row (without a run allowed) or have five shutouts in a week and a half."
