More ‘frustrating’ times

Golden Eagles blow four-run lead, now 1-9 after 10-inning defeat

GLENS FALLS -- The look on the faces of the Golden Eagles players said it all.

The words of Glens Falls coach John Mayotte just confirmed it.

"It's so frustrating," said Mayotte after his team's 5-4, 10-inning loss to Plattsburgh in a NYCBL baseball game Thursday.

After leading 4-0 going into the fifth inning, the Thunder scored five unanswered runs to hand the Golden Eagles its' ninth loss of the season, as they fell to 1-9.

"We've had so many opportunities," Mayotte added, staring out into the darkness of the outfield.

And like the Golden Eagles have encountered all season, those opportunities fell short once again. In the top of the 10th, after Plattsburgh (5-4) scored to take the lead 5-4, Glens Falls had a runner on first and second with two outs, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

"That's typical of the bad luck we've had," Mayotte said.

In the 10th, Plattsburgh left fielder Michael Passante reached third after stealing second and was able to score the game winning run on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Steve Wyland off Golden Eagles pitcher Drew Mahan.

Dustin Corbett came in to pitch in the bottom of the 10th to force two fly balls and a ground out for the save.

Right-handed pitcher Shaun McNamara started for the Eagles and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, when after walking two batters, he gave up two hits that led to three runs scored for Plattsburgh. McNamara was commanding on the mound prior to the fifth inning, when in one instance he struck out two batters and forced a line drive to first for the third out after loading the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch.

As the game prolonged however, McNamara found himself in one a jam after another.

"He got tired a little bit," Mayotte said. "He dominated but I thought he was in and out of a groove."

Though the game ended in a loss, it was the Golden Eagles' second best offensive outing of the season. Tony Clausen went 2-for-4 with an RBI while former Queensbury standout Will Groff went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Third baseman Mike Konstanty went 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.

Mayotte feels the tough losses are a reflection of the stiff competition of the NYCBL.

"Almost every game has been 3-2, I've never seen anything like it," he said. "The pitchers continue to dominate and its hard to hit off them. You have to get runs when you can."

The Golden Eagles will play host to Watertown tonight at 7 p.m. in hopes of ending its three game losing streak.
