GLENS FALLS -- Just when things were looking up for the Golden Eagles, a 4-1 loss to Watertown in a New York Collegiate Baseball League game Wednesday brought back familiar days of when the team couldn't execute to get a win.
Coming off a victory in extra innings over the Saratoga Phillies Tuesday, the Eagles could only muster five hits against Watertown's pitching.
Against starting pitcher Danny Zehr, who pitched four hitless innings in the middle of the game, and with the game scoreless going into the top of the seventh, Glens Falls fell behind on two costly errors that led to all four runs for the Wizards.
The Eagles have been playing better than usual as of late, as they had won the last four of six games before falling to Watertown.
"I was hoping our momentum would carry us into today," said Glens Falls coach John Mayotte.
Through six innings, the momentum was there, but with one out in the seventh, Watertown's Anthony Mendillo reached base on an error by third baseman Will Groff, followed by an error by second baseman Josh Cox that allowed Adam Hussey to reach base also.
On the next at bat, a passed ball allowed one runner to score. Eagles' starting pitcher Casey Walsh, who retired eight straight batters before the two errors, gave up two hits to give Watertown a 3-0 lead. With a runner on second, T.J. Oleary relieved Walsh, only to allow another hit to score Patrick Feeney.
"Casey deserved the shutout, because that error at second (base) cost us the game," Mayotte said.
The Eagles scored their lone run on a RBI single by Mike Konstanty in the seventh. Konstanty, who has been hitting well for the Eagles as of late, hit a fly ball and a ground out before hitting the single.
"(The loss) is just another bump in the road," Konstanty said.
The loss dropped the Eagles record to 8-20.
Mayotte and Konstanty both attributed the team's success to their ability to hit. However, Zehr's pitching was good enough to hold the Eagles to one run on five hits. Zehr struck out five before being relieved in the top of the eighth.
"He's a good pitcher," Konstanty said. "He hit his spots. He wasn't that overpowering but he did shut us down for a little bit."
The win ended a six-game losing streak for the Wizards (15-10), who managed to get 10 hits off Glens Falls.
Mayotte agreed with Konstanty that the loss was merely a bump in the road. He said he hopes the team will get back to its winning ways when it hosts Mohawk Valley at East Field tonight at 7.
"We'll find out, won't we," Mayotte said.
