GLENS FALLS -- After sitting around and doing nothing for four days, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles were eager to finally play a game Friday night at East Field.
Unfortunately for the home team, they were a little too eager. In committing three errors, including a costly throwing miscue in the ninth, Glens Falls fell to Amsterdam, 2-1, and remained winless in four starts.
"It's frustrating because I want to win every game, so yeah I'm ticked off," Golden Eagles coach John Mayotte said. "This was a carbon copy of the loss to Saratoga (Sunday night)."
The Golden Eagles (0-4) continue to struggle at the plate, having scored only four runs in their four games, but it didn't look like it would matter Friday.
With both offenses struggling just to put the bat on the ball, Shaun Hagey's line-drive RBI single over the head of Amsterdam third baseman Jon DeLuca in the bottom of the seventh gave Glens Falls a 1-0 lead.
But in the ninth, the Mohawks (4-2) rallied and scored twice without the benefit of a hit. DeLuca led off with a walk, and then Murray Gilbertson laid down a sacrifice bunt try toward third.
Golden Eagles third baseman Jim Konstanty fielded it cleanly but fired a throw at least 5 feet over the head of first baseman Pat Ferguson. It was Konstanty's second error of the game (in 22 games at Winthrop this spring, Konstanty didn't make one error).
The ball rolled quite a ways down the right field line, allowing DeLuca to score the tying run.
Moments later, Saratoga Springs native Vince Riggi belted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gilbertson and giving Amsterdam a surprising lead.
"It's just one of those things we've got to fight through right now, just not getting the breaks," Golden Eagles pitcher O.J. DeChristofano said.
The defeat wasted an outstanding pitching performance by DeChristofano, who was a freshman at Rutgers this past spring. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, using his curveball on nearly every count to record strikeouts, and didn't walk a batter.
DeChristofano had a no-hitter through five innings, which was broken up by a bunt single by Amsterdam's Jarrod Ware on a sacrifice attempt. DeChristofano allowed just one other hit in the game.
"He was spectacular tonight," Mayotte said. "Everything was moving and he got ahead of everybody."
Glens Falls will try to get its first win of the season today on the road against Watertown at 3 p.m. The Golden Eagles return home Monday for a makeup game against Plattsburgh at East Field at 7 p.m.
