AMSTERDAM -- The Glens Falls Golden Eagles' 2005 season didn't get off to a great start Friday night.
The Golden Eagles hit the road to play the two-time defending New York Collegiate Baseball League champion Amsterdam Mohawks, and Glens Falls came up on the short end of an 8-0 score at Shuttleworth Park.
"We didn't play badly, but they're just a better team than us at this point," Golden Eagles coach John Mayotte said. "Their kid threw a great game and we had trouble hitting the ball."
Amsterdam (1-0) got a complete-game effort from righthander Bryan Cryer. Cryer, who was a freshman at the University of New Orleans, tossed a two-hit shutout and only got himself into one jam.
Glens Falls (0-1) had its only threat in the first, when the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out. But Cryer was able to get out of it with a strikeout and a flyout.
"We hit the ball at people, but it didn't go well for us," Mayotte said. "We had our shot and weren't able to break through."
Amsterdam's offense was able to jump on Glens Falls starter Mike Takashima early. Takashima struggled with his control in the first, walking three batters, then allowed a bases-loaded double to the Mohawks' Jordan Wolf.
Amsterdam put the game away in the middle innings, scoring two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
David Williams and Tony Clausen each hit doubles for Glens Falls, accounting for the only hits Cryer allowed. Cryer also struck out six batters.
"We've got a couple more guys coming in tomorrow, and we're going to get better," Mayotte said.
Glens Falls has opened the season missing a few players, as some trickle in late due to their college teams' participation in the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles open their home campaign tonight at 7 at East Field against Mohawk Valley, with Michigan State hurler Matt Trausch getting the ball on the mound.
Glens Falls will then will play host to the Saratoga Phillies on Sunday at 7 p.m.
