Eagles nip Wizards

WATERTOWN -- No matter the situation, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles just keep on winning.

Friday night at Watertown, the Eagles uncharacteristically fell behind by four runs in the first inning.

No matter. They chipped away throughout the rest of the game and pulled out a 6-5 win, the seventh straight triumph for the New York Collegiate Baseball League's best team.

Watertown jumped on Glens Falls starter Jeremy Hall (5-0) for four runs in the first, but Hall settled down after that and went seven innings.

The Golden Eagles (17-3) were trailing 4-1 in the fifth when Will Groff tripled in Terry Blunt, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Chris Carlson then stepped up and blasted a two-run home run to tie the score at 4.

With the game tied 5-5 in the eighth, Blunt manufactured the go-ahead run. After a single, Blunt stole second and then came around to score after two Watertown errors on the play.

Randy Cornejo pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the save.

The Golden Eagles also had five players selected to Monday's NYCBL All-Star Game in Watertown. Pitchers Hall and Brett Zamzow, center fielder Blunt, catcher Aaron Hepner, and outfielder Ryan Basham have all been chosen.
